Since I have never heard a podcast discussing Harry Potter, or engaged in an Internet chat, or written fanfic using Rowling's characters and settings (which just seems wrong to do anyway), this book was a disappointment because it's about this one girl who's interest in the book led to working on the Leaky Cauldron website, dealing with fans, traveling the country doing podcasts, and visiting England for Potter events and interviews with J.K. Rowling. She got very close to the author, and I would ... Read More:

This book does a good job with what seems to be the recurring Fancy Nancy theme of making the best of a not-so-great situation, and keeps with the "fancy words" concept from the original book.

I do like the notion of introducing kids to more difficult words, but I do have a say it makes it a little odd to have those words show up in an "I Can Read" book. As a Level 1, it's really meant for a parent to read with them anyway, but my 6-year old is probably reading Level 3 or 4 of this type-series, ... Read More:

I have read dozens of young adult, urban fantasy, fiction, etc novels about vampires. Yes all of them seem similar, all of them may have semi-predictable outcomes after reading so many for so many years, but Marked is one of the books I had high hopes for, only to be disappointed. There's plot, action, originality, but to be totally honest the writing style did not do it justice. I felt like i've read fanfictions that were more engaging, this just seemed to combine pure chick lit with vampirism. Decent for a start, ... Read More:

I flipped through this book today with intentions of buying it for my 7 year old son. He is a huge fan of David Macaulay, and has thoroughly enjoyed The Way Things Work. I did not, however, purchase the book because of the last chapter on reproduction. This will be a great tool for kids who are ready for that particular lesson in life, however my 7 year old is not quite ready. The cross-section sketch of a penis inserted in the vagina as well as the page on the sperm's journey entitled "Winner Takes All!" is just a bit too much ... Read More:

Inkheart melded the real world and a fantasy world in a way I never thought possible. As an English teacher, I loved how Funke praised the written word and then made it come alive. While I thought Inkheart dragged out the story a little bit, I was intrigued enough to read Inkspell, mostly because I wanted to see what happened to Mo, Meg, and Elinor.

Unfortunately, I couldn't read more than 10 or so pages of Inkspell at a time. The beginning is fabulous as the characters get pulled into the new world.

Although I think this book was better than book 3, I thought the lack of main plot made the book reading messy. As much as Sookie is beginning to get a backbone with her character, it seems as she really doesn't have control of her daily activities which is a bit disappointing. She accepts invitations that lead to her getting in messy situations, all the while complaining about it. I think most of the side characters were not deep enough for us to warrant any care for. I do like book 1,2, and 4 better.
One thing I have to ... Read More:

Eldest, written by Christopher Paolini, won the 2006 quill book award and followed his first book, Eragon, to the New York Times bestseller list. In Eldest, Eragon now journeys to the land of the elves, Du Weldenvarden, where he further trains to become a Dragon Rider, learning the skills of magic and swordsmanship. He knows that another encounter with Galbortorix could wipe out the Varden in one blow. He meets Arya, the beautiful daughter of the queen, and falls in love with her. ... Read More:

69.A Really Short History of Nearly Everything by: Bill Bryson

Books : A Really Short History of Nearly Everything
This is an excellent book and is very entertaining to read. It starts by explaining the beginning of time (big bang), and then goes chronologically from there explaining pretty much every aspect of the history of the universe and the Earth.

Of course to fit this all into 400 pages Bryson has to be very brief, as the title of the book implies. But despite being brief, he never leaves out anything important. The book discusses many different subjects, including astronomy, physics, chemistry, geology, and especially the biology of life on ... Read More:

Perhaps appropriate for discussion with an older child, but written and drawn for younger ones. Brings to mind cartoon Camel cigarette art drawn to appeal to adolescents. As a parable this story has power and merit along the lines of the song "Cat's In The Cradle" by Harry Chapin, but its presentation in a format for young children is totally inappropriate. This is a horrible, disturbing book.
