| As a student using this text book right now, I have to say that I am completely frustrated with it. I'm an English major and am stuck with this class so I can graduate on time, so already I am not apt towards the material. What I can say that is complementary about this book is that is written quite nicely. Literally, the language is very good for a text book. | I really like this book as a textbook for high school chemistry, but I don't think it goes in depth enough for a college intro class. If you need a high school textbook, though, I highly recommend this one. |

| I am not sure about helping college students or using it to CLEP out of chemistry, but this book helped my son, 17, get through high school chemistry by bringing his grade from an F to a B. The book puts into easy terms what may be lacking with the instruction received in school. I would definitely recommend this to any other mother that has a child struggling with high school chemistry. It was a terrific addition to the high school book by putting things into an easy to read and understand format. |

| On a certain page of "Matter" a callout next to a picture of a glass lens states that "glass flows over time". This is a widely believed myth that is simply not true. The "evidence" for the liquid nature of glass comes from old church and cathedral windows that appear to be thicker at the bottom as the glass has flowed over the centuries. This is not the case. | On page 28 of this book, a project calls for adding ammonia to "liquid fabric whitener."
I am very concerned that this is not a specific enough designation for some shoppers, and they might end up using bleach product containing chlorine instead of the old-fashioned bluing that is presumably intended. There are far too many products with "whitens" as one of the claims on the label. Many contain chlorine. Mixing chlorine and ammonia releases a deadly gas. | I thought that this was a great book. I used it for honors chemistry in high school and used the book more than the teacher did because I thought that the book gave some really good examples and lessons, which were completely worked through. This is a great book for people just starting to take chemistry. But beware, a few little topics are passed up, like calculating physical changes. |
