| DK publishes great books - we have many of the hardboards as well as ones similar to this. If you have the 'Trains' or "Things That Go" ones, you may find this a tad redundant (dump truck and trains are again featured in "Monster"). I was especially impressed with the inclusion of the Jumbo Jet (photo of piggy-backed Space Shuttle was cool) and the Ice Breaker Ship. I find the fold-out pages to be more an asset than hindrance. | This is a great book/ puzzle for truck-obsessive toddlers. Each of six 2-page spreads features text on one page and 1/6 of a photo of a dump truck in action on the other. Most of each photo page consists of a pop-out puzzle piece. The six pieces can be assembled to make a large (maybe 18" x 30") completed photo. They can also be flipped over to make an illustration of a construction scene featuring a bunch of different trucks.

| Byron Barton Board Books (wow...try to say that 5 times fast!) are the best that I've found. My son has loved the Trucks book since since he was 6 months old and still loves it along with Planes and Boats at 14 months. Some things I've noticed about these books:

| We've borrowed this book from the library so many times, I gave in and finally bought our own copy. My 19 month old son loves this book and reads it several times a day. Its the first book he has actually taken a interest in. I like the fact it has real pictures of the machines instead of drawings and that it has few words -- perfect for the attention span of a toddler. |

| My 2.5 yr old toddler loves trucks and airplanes and all things wheeled. We got this and The Three Little Rigs by the same author (which I promptly put away to be read at a much later date because it seemed to scary to me for my child at this age - I need to review it again). But so far we love the Ugly Truckling. It is a book for younger "readers" as one review said - as it may be obvious to an older child right away that the Ugly Truckling is in fact an airplane. | The bright illustrations are perfect for young children and the amount of words on the page is appropriate as well. The sentences are not complex, yet they introduce useful vocabulary that is easy to connect to the pictures. Children learn different types of big working trucks, such as backhoe, snow plow, combine, plow, etc. My 3 year old grandson has me read it over and over. It is obvious that we will soon own the complete series! |
