| This is a book about a boy in some gone time who runs all around to make a pancake (just one?) for breakfast. His mother tells him what to do every step of the way - he has to cut, thresh, and mill the wheat; he must feed the chicken and get an egg; he must milk a cow and churn the cream; and then it's all mixed together to make a pancake. There's no mention of baking powder or baking soda, so I'm guessing this takes place before the Civil War.

| My son has been fascinated with this book. He understands so much more than I gave him credit for. He's only 2.5 years old, but he's EXTREMELY verbal and very bright when it comes to books. However, I agree with the english teacher/mommy that it is NOT for the average toddler. I think a bright preschooler or for the child who is fascinated with plants and flowers, it is quite appropriate. | My 13 months old daughter loves this book; I have borrowed it from a library and it became such an indispensable favorite of our bedtime routine that I had to buy it. My daughter and I enjoy the beautiful watercolors - vivid, crisp and not too busy to distract a very young reader, and she has an especially great fun in finding a little brown mouse hidden among the zoo animals on each picture. | In general, I am not a big Eric Carle fan. Some of his books I do not care for at all, while others I do like. This one, however, I think is wonderful. It is my favorite of his books. I like how it incorporates the days of the week, different foods, and the life cycle of a caterpillar. I like that my toddler can learn all these things in French, and he likes being able to put his little fingers through the holes made by the hungry caterpillar. | The paintings/illustrations in this book are classic Eric Carle and are actually on a bigger scale than many of his books. They are glorious and beatiful and in his completely unique style.
The story flows really well and can easily be seen as a religious tale. But, like the Chronicles of Narnia, it can be read just as a straightforward story, too. | This cumulative tale goes quickly through the days of the week, each day featuring a different animal and a different food. At the end of the book there's a bit of sheet music indicating how to sing the song.
This is a very short book, and well-suited for toddlers. Not one of my favorites, but we do manage to fit it in a few times a month. |

| This oversized book does indeed belong on the bookshelf of every child. They just do not come much better. The wonderful art work by Eric Carle is worth the price of the book alone (If I could afford it, I would dearly love to have one of his originals hanging on my office or home wall). The entire book is made up of Carle's wonderful paintings of various animals, and each is accompanied by a poem written by some of the best poets in the world.
