Like the other volumes in this National Geographic "How to Be" series, "How to Be a Samurai Warrior" pretends that it is trying to recruit you to serve your local daimyo or even the shogun. Young readers imagine that they are living in Japan four hundred years ago and that they are considering a career as a samurai warrior. I agree with "Painful." I am so disappointed in this book. Facts, figures, and no life. But it wasn't a total loss; I learned about the Metis, a group of people descended from Indians and French trappers who forged a unique culture with French and Aboringinal elements. With their leader, Louis Riel, they rebelled against the Canadian government in the 1880s and set up their own (short-lived) independent country!

I am a fan of Gillian Chan's short stories for young adults. I basically devoured her two short story collections, Glory Days, and Golden Girl, so when I saw that she had written a novel, I picked it up.

From the very first page, I was swept into the story. My own beloved dog had died just a week before I read this novel, and so the character of Dog especially appealed to me. It is not easy to fully develop an animal character in a realistic novel, but Chan achieves this admirably. I had tears in my eyes ... Read More:

Books : This Land Is My Land
This is a gorgeous book. LIttlechild is an incredible artist and memoirist. The texts, which narrate each painting, are very useful for demonstrating the integration of memoir and art in the classroom. Teachers of elementary grades should know that he is very open and honest, using words such as prostitution and alcoholism, when he discusses the plight of urban Indian issues and family matters. My fourth graders were amazed at the art work, and we're hoping to do something similar. He collages photographs of his ancestors and uses bright, bold ... Read More:
