I've been reading this on my morning bus commute. I've missed my stop twice because I was so engrossed in one of the tales. I'm a Charles DeLint fan which is why I bought the book. It introduced me to a whole bunch of interesting Canadian writers with great stories to tell. The famous Canadian monster story is a hoot. Who knew Canada had so many national monsters?

This novel is based on an incident during the winter of 1932, when a trapper in the NWT, Canada by the name of "Albert Johnson" led the RCMP on a epic cross-country chase through the Canadian arctic. Although a media sensation, the story soon faded to obscurity; only to be resurrected by Dick North, a small-town newspaper editor, in his book The Mad Trapper of Rat River, and the dubious Thomas P. Kelley in his The Rat River Trapper. Both published in 1972. Soon afterwards, Saskatoon-based Granicus Films began work ... Read More:

Delightful in its simplicity but evocative in the imagery, this book is a treasure. It reminds me of the wonders of my youth growing up on the prairies. The scenes would have been just a few miles from my own family home place.

This story, lovingly told, examines the bleak history of Armenian orphans transported far from home to the shores of Canada following a genocide in their homeland. Skrypuch brings the fear and wonder of the boys' experiences to life with her clear text and vivid imagery. Reading the story is a visceral experience not to be missed.

The book is ok. It just wasnt what I was looking for. I wish I could have seen inside before I bought it. I work with young children and this is to much. But it would be great for older children.
