I don't know. Maybe I'm just past that point of childhood anguish, but while there are many kid books with which I can connect this was not one of them. That isn't to say this wasn't a cute story. But I also feel that this is a little early to teach kids stereotypes-- the mean, girly-girl, the kind tom-boy girl. On the bright side, it's a clever story and I liked the way things turned out. But it's nothing special.

Lotty the raccoon was looking forward to a new school year, until she met Grant Grizzly. Grant was a bully and made life miserable for Lotty. She tried ignoring him. She told him to stop it. She even tried to make friends with him, but nothing worked. Finally, Lotty came up with a brilliant idea. She formed a club with some of the other students who were being bullied by Grant. When one of the club-members was being bullied, the other members stood up for them and got the attention of an adult. ... Read More:

I love "Vive La Paris", it was such a great read! I really like Paris' voice and I'm glad that Codell brought her back from "Sahara Special". Paris is really naive about the Holocaust, which gets her in some trouble, but I think she handles things wonderfully. I think everyone should read this book at some point, no matter what their age. I find that it is a great read-aloud book, too. It was fun to share with people around me.

As always, the Casson kids are courageous, delightful, complex, funny, resourceful, creative, etc. And their parents are criminally neglectful selfish pigs.

What the father does at the end of the book does not mitigate his selfishness. It only highlights it. He has lots of money but the kids go hungry. What a jerk! (That isn't the word I wanted to use!)

As has been mentioned, the book is as much about the kid with thorns, Rose, as it is about Indigo. But there is plenty about him.

My first grade class in Texas loved The Ant Bully so much when I read it aloud in class. Our favorite part was when Sid the neighboorhood bully was skrunken by the ants at the end. We thought Sid would have to work like an ant. We would recommend this book to all the first grade classes around the world.

Billy was nicknamed "Pinky" because of his love for the color; even his stuffed animals have a bit of pink somewhere on them. He's got no problem with the name until a school bully begins taunting him, calling him a girl (generally not received well by seven-year-old boys), and generally intimidating him.

Pinky, wondering if he's too old for such a nickname, decides to change his name back to Billy, and give his beloved animals to his sister. Fortunately, an older neighborhood woman teaches him to accept himself as he is:
