| I grew up on Homer Price (along with Danny Dunn and Henry Huggins). I don't even own a copy of the book and haven't read it in 45 years but I can still recite from memory: "Forty two pounds of Edible Fungus, in the wilderness a-growin, saved the settlers from starvation helped the founding of our nation!"
Make sure your kids read this book. And "Centerburg Tales" too! |

| This book is relatable for kids -- Henry is a real kid with real emotions. I like the way he acts with Ramona and Ribsy, and all the kids. It's very funny -- great book. In a universe of vulgar books for boys, this is a treasure of a book for any child. |

| I first read this book when I was about 12 -- it was a birthday gift. I don't have many books from my childhood (most are still at Mom's) but I have Mandy.

| I have to echo other reviewers about the many technical writing shortcomings in this. It's a study in telling instead of showing, the character voices were off, most of the characters were less than two dimensional and the kids didn't sound anything like kids. I also found the treatment of animals/arachnids -- and the kids' reactions towards it -- very disturbing.
Even if you somehow manage to get past all that, or simply don't know enough about good story telling (or care about animals) for this to bother you, the godawful science should get you. These are things ... Read More: |

| I was assigned to read this in college as an example of how "young adult" fiction is difficult to define. Fallen Angels definitely defies labeling, and adroitly demonstrates that young adult fiction can be every bit as weighty as adult fiction.
The book reminded me of Richard Price's "Clockers," in that it was a very unglamorous look at the harshly real life of a young black American trying to make his way through a dangerous world.
