Great book that shows children the difference between "kidding around" and "being mean." Trudy Ludwig has written an interesting, compassionate story that will spark important parent-child conversations.

I grew up on Homer Price (along with Danny Dunn and Henry Huggins). I don't even own a copy of the book and haven't read it in 45 years but I can still recite from memory: "Forty two pounds of Edible Fungus, in the wilderness a-growin, saved the settlers from starvation helped the founding of our nation!"

Make sure your kids read this book. And "Centerburg Tales" too!

do you have an up and coming teenage boy in your life, who has no idea what women his age want and even his father is at a blank and you are in desperate need of guidance?! There is help and the answer lies in this book.

When I began to read FYMO, I could only nod my head at the wonderful insight these writers had. From everything to what a girl sees in a guy to the dreaded whether a girl wants to 'do it' is in this book and handled beautifully. Now, for even you older men, it can be an eye opener ... Read More:

Jerry Renault is just your typical fourteen-year-old freshman (and football player) at a private Catholic high school minding his own business when, one day, a gang of student thugs called The Vigils task him with refusing to sell chocolates for the annual fundraiser. Brother Leon, a no-nonsense, obnoxious teacher doubles the usual candy order, then requires that the students take on the task of selling them (50 boxes each) willingly by requiring them to "accept" the chocolates during a daily roll call. Day after day, Jerry ... Read More:

57.Henry and Ribsy by: Beverly Cleary

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Henry and Ribsy
This book is relatable for kids -- Henry is a real kid with real emotions. I like the way he acts with Ramona and Ribsy, and all the kids. It's very funny -- great book. In a universe of vulgar books for boys, this is a treasure of a book for any child.

58.Mandy by: Julie Edwards
1984-04
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Mandy
I first read this book when I was about 12 -- it was a birthday gift. I don't have many books from my childhood (most are still at Mom's) but I have Mandy.

Mandy strikes a deep nerve. The book is written by Julie Andrews (the actress -- Sound of Music) and it is lovely and elegant. The writing is smart but not inaccessible, and the plot is touching.

An orphan girl longs for something... something she can not pinpoint. She is the darling of the orphanage, because she has been there a long time. She has the trust of the matron and ... Read More:

I have to echo other reviewers about the many technical writing shortcomings in this. It's a study in telling instead of showing, the character voices were off, most of the characters were less than two dimensional and the kids didn't sound anything like kids. I also found the treatment of animals/arachnids -- and the kids' reactions towards it -- very disturbing.

Even if you somehow manage to get past all that, or simply don't know enough about good story telling (or care about animals) for this to bother you, the godawful science should get you. These are things ... Read More:

60.Fallen Angels by: Walter Dean Myers
1988
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Fallen Angels
I was assigned to read this in college as an example of how "young adult" fiction is difficult to define. Fallen Angels definitely defies labeling, and adroitly demonstrates that young adult fiction can be every bit as weighty as adult fiction.

The book reminded me of Richard Price's "Clockers," in that it was a very unglamorous look at the harshly real life of a young black American trying to make his way through a dangerous world.

The characters in this book are much more fully fleshed out than they would be in an after school special; Myers takes advantage ... Read More:
