Books : How Do Apples Grow? (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 2)
I purchased this with the hope that I would be able to use the pictures for discussion about apples with the preschoolers that I teach. The illustrations are wonderful but are truly geared toward an early elementary school level science curriculum. A better choice for my age level children was The Season's of Arnold's Apple Tree by Gail Gibbons in which a little boy interacts with a tree throughout the seasons of the year.

Books : Trees;: A guide to familiar American trees, (A Golden nature guide)
I used the original edition of this book and it was my introduction to dendrology. It shows the overall tree, leaf structure, and flowers, which are the main parts to use in identifying a plant. One thing it lacks is a close up illustration of the bark, useful in differentiating pines, firs, and so forth, and even hardwoods such as sycamore, which has peeling, deciduous bark, and the prunus genus, which contains cherry trees, which have horizontally striated, lenticele bark. This book covers North ... Read More:

This is an interesting book and the second science book that we have looked at which was written and illustrated by Aliki. In this book she covers a wide variety of aspects of Corn.

She begins by explaining that a corn kernel is a seed. She then shows how sun and rain affects the planted seeds. There are drawings of developing corn with tassels and silk (boy and girl parts.) There is a smaller drawing of the route pollen takes to get to the kernel. The pollen travels down the silk to reach ... Read More:

Clear and attractive. I used this book to teach the process, but it struck me that it has other potential uses.

This book may be useful in combination with Johnny Appleseed and A Packet of Seeds. Although this picture book is considered young juvenile, it could be used with higher levels, and worked well with some of my older English language learner students.

The book ends with a "From seed to plant" project planting beans, which may be appropriate for integrating science and math ... Read More:

Solid intro to basic concepts regarding trees. I occasionally wished Gibbons would have chosen the more scientifically correct term than a common, but less specific word. Includes an identification guide for various trees and shows young naturalists how to make their own tree identification book (pressing leaves, leaf and bark rubbings, and drawings). I bought this book with some others that I needed, but without being able to page through it. I was hoping for a book with few words but great photos that show the different aspects of pumpkins and growing to share with my preschool special education classroom before our visit to the pumpkin farm. What a happy surprise to find out it was Perfect! It contained some photos of planting that I had no pictures of yet. Plus the written text accentuated the photos. It was short enough that I didn't have to "paraphrase" to ... Read More:

Having purchased this book to use in teaching a class to small shildren, I am always delighted to see just how much excellent info and clear pictures are included in such a pleasant and appealing style-a poem musically winds through the book, holding the attention of the younger child to gently plant the seeds of information in their fertile little heads!
