Books : Holes

I have a lot of respect for a writer who can take holes, lizards and onions and create an incredible story.

This book was amazing. It held my interest from the very first page. The characters were lovable and interesting (I particularly liked Zero), the plot was fast paced and engaging, the writing style was easy to read and follow. I felt like I was there with the boys digging all those holes.

Once again, kudos to Louis Sacher for creating such a great thought provoking ... Read More:

I'll let you read other reviews to decide if you want to try the book. This review is specifically in reference to the audio book, which is read by actor Chad Lowe. My daughters and I listen to audio books daily, and we've listened to some truly gifted readers. The trouble with Hoot is that Chad Lowe reads with the skill that I expect from a non-professional. He brings absolutely nothing extra to the performance of the book. Very disappointing.

Books : Bridge to Terabithia
I always like to read a book before I see it's movie version. I picked this on up b/c I am a big fan of fantasy and I am growing to like young adult fiction as I pick good books to read to my kids. This is not what I expected from the movie preview, but it was well worth reading.

Jess Aaron does not fit into his rural northern Virginian life. He loves to draw, daydreams, and is baffled by his dysfunctional, down and out family. Then Leslie Burke and her "hippy" parents move into the abandoned farm next door. Leslie, ... Read More:

45.The Sign of the Beaver by: Elizabeth George Speare

Speare gives a realistic picture of the edgy but generally humane interactions between the Native Americans and the European settlers. SOTB is unstintingly honest but not depressingly so, and is interesting in its description of life in those days. And it gives many interesting details about life as lived in earlier and simpler times. I enjoyed reading it to my kids and they seemed to enjoy it too. Recommended.

I couldn't get into this series. It took me forever to read the entire trilogy because I just couldn't engage myself with it. I read the three books a couple of pages at a time with large breaks in between. I finished it out of pure stubborness.

Its not that the books were bad. Because the idea behind them was quite interesting.

My problem was that I didn't like any of the characters. The only one I vaguely liked was Will and even then... after two books, I felt like I didn't know him any better than ... Read More:

My 5- and 7-year-old boys LOVED this story! Lots of great mischief. I never knew Roald Dahl beyond "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," and "James and the Giant Peach." "The Twits" is great for younger audiences. I can't wait to get more of his books.

Yes, there are similarities between the Book of Three and the Lord of the Rings: Both feature a wizard, a ranger type figure, a bad guy in a mask and a strange little creature who slithers around talking about eating. If you read enough fantasy you'll see these type of characters turn up again and again, and you'll often be able to draw comparisons with Tolkien. But it's important to note that if you read enough Norse, Germanic and Anglo-Saxon mythology (ie Beowulf) you'll see that Tolkien too borrowed heavily from others. In fantasy, like a lot of other ...
