181.The Incredible Journey by: Sheila Burnford

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : The Incredible Journey
A classic children's book - or is it? Sheila Burnford (1918-84) has said she never wrote it to be a children's book, and indeed it's written in a very realistic manner - no talking animals here. The main theme is loyalty - pet loyalty to their masters, to one another, and human loyalty to animals. It's all very saccharin sweet. A more believable story would have shown the animals internal struggle between returning to the wild (going feral), versus the safety and comforts of remaining captive under ... Read More:

I have put off reading this book for years... mainly because of its size, and the fact that it was written in French, and I just didn't want to put that much work into anything. I finally convinced myself that I really needed to read this because I enjoy the movies so much.

In the beginning... I was worried. The language was easy enough to follow (concern number 1 gone) but the writing style seemed a bit loose and haphazard. Rather than my mind being boggled, I found myself getting irritated ... Read More:

I just thought I should explain that clearly (hint, hint) after reading a few of the negative reviews. NOT a whole lot of singin' and dancin' going on in the south during Reconstruction, historically speaking that is. And this book doesn't make you feel "sad"...just oppressed...wait for it...ah, ha!...a masterpiece for all races, without a doubt. If younger readers don't get it, that might not be such a tragedy after all.

I had never heard the real King Arthur tale. I enjoyed it tremendously! Sean Bean's narration of this tale is exquisite. His voice is perfect for books on tape. Such depth. You felt you were really there. I would recommend this to anyone!

I can't believe I haven't read Andrew Clements before, but I'm really glad I discovered him now. He's fast becoming one of my favorite middle-grade writers.

Normally I'm drawn to YA and middle-grade fantasy, SF, and mysteries, and those remain my favorites. But lately my ten year old's reading for school has necessitated stepping outside my favorite genre haunts and picking up books on other people's reading lists. I've read and reviewed Clements's THE JANITOR'S BOY, and really enjoyed it. So picking up THE SCHOOL STORY was ... Read More:

187.Ozma of Oz by: L. Frank Baum

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Ozma of Oz
Ozma of Oz has always been one of my favorites of the Oz series. I loved seeing Dorothy back in the land of Oz, and her reunion with all her old friends was amazing. I also highly enjoyed her meeting with Ozma, and the friendship there is a really great one. [Also, Glinda! Oh, all the connections to the original Oz book, amazingness :D] Never did like the Nome King, but the challenge set by him was pretty clever, and kudos, kudos, kudos to Billina! Baum's cleverness never dies, as we see with his lunch and dinner pails, the green tin pig ... Read More:

Our mom just finished reading The Children's Homer to us. It was interesting. The story is about people and adventures. We liked the part when someone sings a song about Odysseus building the horse. It's the children's homer and we think you should learn more about the journey of Odysseus. You will also learn about Achilles and some of the battles of Troy. We like that Odysseus was most wanting to get home to his family.
Ages 10, 8, and 7.

The characters are Ralph, Ryan and Brad. Ralph has a motorcycle but his relatives want to ride it. But Ralph thinks the relatives will get their tails stuck in the wheels and brake the motorcycle.

Ryan lived at a hotel and brought Ralph the mouse to school in his pocket.

Ralph had problems with lots of stuff, a maze that Brad wanted to be harder with trap doors and tunnels. Ralph was mad at Brad.

My favorite part was everything. I would recommend this book to people that like motorcycles and cars and mice.

I bought two sets. Sent one to my 29 year old daughter in New Mexico and one home to my 24 year old son. They both have enjoyed listening to the set. Well worth the money that I paid for it.
