I thought it was really good. I love how these books are short, but get you really into the story. The author definitely doesn't fill the pages with useless boring information. The books are easy fast reads and I love how every person in the book is there for a reason. The book reminded me of the Mary-kate and Ashley movie that I watched when I was little called "How the West Was Fun" because it was also about a ranch and treasure too.

The Janitor's Boy
By Andrew Clements

Jack is going through growing pains, as any fifth grader might experience. He found out, at an early age, it isn't cool to grow up to be a janitor, like his father. When he begins the fifth grade, Jack finds that his middle school is temporarily housed in the old high school building. The building janitor is Jacks dad.

Jack tries hard to avoid his dad, until the day a classmate throws up. The janitor is called to clean up the mess. ... Read More:

I guess I didn't miss much by not reading this book as a child. I don't really understand why it became a classic. It starts out interestingly enough with a very gothic setting. A little British girl named Mary survives a cholera epidemic in India and is sent to Yorkshire to live with her distant relatives. The author gives a vivid description of the beauty of the moors and the mysterious mansion that the girl goes to live in. The only other interesting part is really when Mary discovers the boy...more I guess I didn't miss ... Read More:

This is an imaginative little book that makes a great gift. "A Hole is to Dig" is a compilation of child-like observations with whimsical pictures. It serves as a delightful reminder to enjoy children and the world around us from their point of view. I usually include this book with a baby shower gift, but the soft cover version just isn't "gift quality".

A 2007 Summer Reading List Mini Review

I never realized before how much the Scooby Doo cartoon series is indebted to the Hardy Boys and other teenage mystery series of that genre. We have a group of teeneage kids, who stumble into mysteries. The scoobies have the mystery mobile. The Hardy's have thir car and their boat aptly named "the sleuth." Scooby Doo seems to be a Hardy boys adventure played for laughs. The capture baddies in this book even bemoan their fate on p.169 stating "If they hadn't come snooping-". Sounds ... Read More:

I am a children's magician who bought this book after seeing it on Reading Rainbow. I buy a book for every one of my library shows, and after reading it to the children as part of the show (with the help of my trusty side kick, a sheep dog puppet), we donate the book to the library. This book featured the three most important things relating to the show I was performing at the time : A dog, and child, and a mysterious old retired magician. Chirs Van Allsburg writes such incredible stuff, but this was a real find. Th kids loved it, the librarian ... Read More:

Books : The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Children's Classics (Dove Audio))
This delightful novel has rekindled my desire to read or re-read the classics. I picked it up for no particular reason other than I had never read Hugo. I didn't expect much: My experience with the classics in high school and college was that they are dull and not worthy of modern reading. But, to my pleasant surprise, I discovered a fascinating book that is rich in wonderful characters and vivid descriptions of 13th century Paris. This is a very good book and it's easy to see why it has stood the test of time.

One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.
~Virginia Woolf, A Room of One's Own

Virginia Woolf's very intense A Room Of One's Own, is actually a long essay she wrote "with ardour and conviction" on the the topic of women and fiction, that she prepared when asked to speak about this subject at women's colleges. A Room of One's Own was published in 1929, when young women were still discouraged from attending college (due to genuine fear that a good education would make a women unfit for marriage and motherhood), ... My daughter read this book recently as an AR (Advanced Reader) Book. She loved the book and couldn't put it down. She would have to tell me all the things that were happening as she read it. This is a Level 4.9 AR book and is great for challenging a 3rd grader who is a very good reader. I would highly recommend this book.
