A Child's Christmas In Wales CD: And Five Poems
Hurrah! Now I won't have to wait for the radio to play Dylan Thomas reading his wonderful Child's Christmas every Christmas. Truly a beautiful recording of the other poems as well.

Books : The Secret Garden
The story of a 'frightful little girl', whose point of view changes as she discovers the secrets of her new surroundings.
A well-written story at times, but it definitely had its draggy moments. It seemed to promise more than it delivered(I expected more of a fantasy tale, along the lines of 'The Chronicles of Narnia'.)
The characters were well-developed, though Colin kind of took over what had been 'Mary's story' toward the end.
Perhaps not the best 'classic children's lit' out there, ... Read More:

Books : The Wind in the Willows
I believe that a narrator can really make an audio book and Flo Gibson does such a fabulous job of the voices of the characters in "The Wind in the Willows". This is one of my son's all time favorite books and audio books. I highly recommend it.

Lois Lowry provides a little look into a fantasy world. No special powers, luckily, but it is an imaginary land with imaginary people. They could exist though, people could be like that... As the book opens our special girl is somewhat even luck to be alive.. Usually when a child is born with a disfigurement they are sent out to die, but Kira, now a teenager was luckily spared. The words "Gathering Blue" can have more then one connotation, but both may apply here. As you read the book, look occasionally to the front ... Read More:

Books : Snow Treasure
This story is about a boy named Peter who lives in Norway at the start of World War II. When Norway is invaded by the Germans, Peter helps sneak gold past the Nazis on a sled. His Uncle Victor came up with the idea, and every person in Peter's school helped. They did this operation because they were afraid the Germans would steal the gold and use it to buy guns to kill the Norwegians. They had children take the gold to disguise it as sledding, so the Nazis wouldn't suspect. At first, it was 4 bars of gold per person, and then ... Read More:

277.The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde by: Robert Louis Stevenson
1999-01
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde
Classic story about the duality of personality personified as two sides of one person and manifested as two physical appearances--the taller more mature Dr. Jekyll and the shorter stunted Mr. Hyde. Hyde of course represents evil, unalloyed with any good, which remains part of Dr. Jekyll--who is fatally flawed with a mixture of mostly good, but awareness of evil.

In the end, evil triumphs.

The story follows a similar pattern in Victorian literature as told by Wilde in "The Picture of Dorian Gray."

Books : Loser
While I absolutely LOVE (and always have) the beginning of the book, even the middle, detailing all of Zinkoff's various childish misadventures, I've always failed to understand how that's all resolved in the end. Perhaps 'resolved' is the wrong word, after all, we wouldn't all want our favorite Loser to turn into someone else entirely. More accurately, then, it just didn't feel like an ending. Then again, what would an appropriate ending have been, right? Zinkoff's fully comfortable with his status, it's not self-acceptance. I also ... Read More:

280.Swimmy by: Leo Lionni

Books : Swimmy
When my children were young, Swimmy was one of the books we often read together. Our daughter,Kathryn, now 24, graduated from the University of Chicago with her Masters in Social work, emphasizing in Community Organization. I wanted the young kids coming to her graduation party to have an idea about what Kathryn had studied, and Swimmy offered a perfect example of a group of individuals working together to change their outcome for the better. Leo Lionni's story discusses community relationships, the process of overcoming tragedy, resilience, and the ability ... Read More:
