Books : Ribsy
Ribsy is one of Beverly Cleary's series on the children of Klikitat Street in Portland Oregon. It is pure 50's childhood and very entertaining. I use this as an independent reading selection for groups of my fourth grade ESL students. They can easily read it on their own, helping one another on the vocabulary, and they stay interested. All have asked to take it home to finish it. If you're a teacher who is looking to keep your class occupied while you hone in on students with learning problems, ... Read More:

I read this once before, loved it then, love it now. It's definitely not the best of Sharon Creech (and if you're interested in that, definitely check out Absolutely Normal Chaos), but it's really good writing. The one thing that bothers me though is the boy's voice. His actions are those of a little boy, as are his emotions, but his words...they make me wonder. Is there any chance he has a mental disorder? I don't know any children who think/speak like that. They're enthusiastic, sure, but this ... Read More:

I read this book after my son read it in school. I must say, I wasn't very impressed. The characters were shallow, the dialouge juvenile, and the plot predictable.
This is a book written for young kids. And young kids will most likely enjoy it. It is a great book for kids, as it is easy to read and has no objectionable content. But for anyone but young kids, it's a drag.

In which the children almost save Josephine on Lake Lachrymose, but are actually fortunate enough to unmask Count Olaf just in time.

This is the final book in the series used as the basis for the movie (Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (Widescreen Edition)), which I think did a good job of capturing the characters and the feel (the movie narration especially capturing the ironic tone of the author) of the first three books in the series. The plot changes seem necessary to create a cinematic ... Read More:

Rachel Simmons shines the light on girl aggression/bullying and it can no longer slip under the radar in our schools. When and how are we doing to stop girl bullying in our schools? Simmons writes about her own familiarity with bullying. She also includes a variety of stories from different girls/women's experiences with bullying. There is no pretty pink coating to go over the reality of what is happening in our schools and from what I have come to understand, will continue at an intensified level in the future.

Books : The Motley Fool Investment Guide for Teens: 8 Steps to Having More Money Than Your Parents Ever Dreamed Of
I'm turning 38 next year, and I humbly admit that the whole idea of saving and investing only sank in a couple of years ago (this was when I made my first mutual fund investment, out of impulse!). I've learned about the Beauty of Compounding a long time ago, but I guess my brain wasn't wired enough to see its real-life application. I've had good jobs, and have made good income on the side, but I have never thought of consciously putting at least a dollar away for my future.

Then this book came up from the bargain bin of a ... Read More:

Books : Gossamer
This month I read the fantastic book Gossamer by Lois Lowry. It is about imaginary creatures called dreamgivers. Each dreamgiver has a house; there they gather happy memories from items and give humans and pets dreams. The main character in this story is named Littlest One. Each night she and her teacher Thin Elderly set dreams upon the humans. In the house to which Littlest One and Thin Elderly were assigned lives a lady and an eight year old boy named Jon. The evil sinisteeds have targeted Jon because of his troubled past. Sinisteeds are evil ... Read More:

Books : The Gruffalo's Child
I agree with other reviews that I don't think this book is as good as The Gruffalo...but I'm still giving it 5 stars because it is still a really great book. I don't think the story is as clever and the ending seems a little anti-climatic. But my 18 month old son LOVES this book...even more than The Gruffalo. This is one of the most often read books in our house.
