Books : The Cat in the Hat Comes Back (Beginner Book and Cassette Library)
This book started out in similar fashion to the original Cat in the Hat book, but then it turned ugly and a little disturbing.

Once again, the children are left alone, this time responsible for shoveling snow while the mother goes into town. The Cat in the Hat shows up and invites himself in the house, where he makes himself at home by eating cake in the bathtub. When he exits the tub, there is a pink ring that needs to be cleaned up. The cat uses various objects and surfaces in ... Read More:

Books : Gregor the Overlander (Underland Chronicles)
Gregor the Overlander is the must-read book of the year! This book kept me up for hours at night trying to find out what happens next. The story starts out with 11 year old Gregor and his 2 year old sister Boots falling into the amazing Underland. There they meet people and creatures of all kinds, including rats, bats, and giant cockroaches! Gregor also finds out that his father who had been missing for 2 years might have fallen to the Underland and been kidnapped by the rats. In the fight to find his father ... Read More:

Books : King Bidgood's in the Bathtub (Book and Audio Cassette)
This is a wonderfully illustrated book about a silly King who would not get out of the tub. The song on the CD isn't quite how I remembered it but fun just the same.

Books : My Father's Dragon
Let's just keep it simple. My dad read this to me when I was six. At the age of 18 I still remember the book, author, and plot line and I plan on reading it to my kids. My Father's Dragon is a childhood classic that just doesn't get old.

Books : A Wizard of Earthsea (The Earthsea Cycle, Book 1)
One of the basic tenets of writing good fiction is "show me, don't tell me." An example: Tell - "Ged didn't like Jasper." Show - "Ged felt a strong urge to punch Jasper right in his sniveling little face every time he looked at him. Every snide remark, every condescending look, increased the power of that urge."

Both of those examples convey that Ged didn't like Jasper, but which one brings you into the story and adds character development? That's the problem with the author's writing--pages and pages of narration. Too much telling ... Read More:

This book is appealing from many perspectives: historic, artistic, and emotional. The content is intimate "letters from Father Christmas" written by Tolkien to his children for some 20 years. The letters and envelopes have beautiful color illustrations done by Tolkien, and are shown in detail in the book. You can not help but feel like one of Tolkien's children, and marvel at the subtle grandeur of this simplest of gifts.

Being a child I loved her story about Phoebe, Ben, Mrs.Cadaver, and her trip to Lewiston, Idaho. I almost cried at the end of the story when Sal visits her mother's grave and when Gram dies.

This book was an instant hit, and we have sung it many times each day for my 12 month old grandson. The board book form is especially important for a book so "loved" by toddlers.

I think the temptation here is to give "Paddle to the Sea" five stars. After all, the book is a dazzling display of art and narrative, an educational and interesting tale. But five stars is the voice of the adult reviewer, and this book is mostly read by and to young children.

I was excited to stumble across this book in the library: I remembered it from my childhood. But I was surprised to find how little of the book I remembered. Mostly I remembered the general idea--perhaps my parents were not too keen on reading the entire book.
