| This is a great book! It is well written and the story line is very easy to follow. This book was one of three books that was required summer reading for my daughter's 6th grade class and she loved it as well. It gave her a different perspective on the different and most often times unfair treatment African American received during the 1930s. I strongly recommend this book to every young person to learn a few of life's lessons. |

| Do not believe the American designation of this book as being for young adults. It isn't. It is beautifully written and is the best book I've read since Oscar Wao. I loved it so much after reading a library copy that I bought myself a hard cover copy to keep! |

| As much as I enjoy audio books I'll admit that my initial reaction to this one wasn't overly enthusiastic. The first in this series was written forty-some years ago, and has captivated generations. | I've blasted through all four Percy Jackson & the Olympians series and re-read them for extra measure and pleasure. | I purchased this book as part of a reading list for my daughter who is entering 6th grade. So actually this review is her feedback to me -- DISAPPOINTING!!! She felt that the book's idea was interesting but that the writing lacked the richness of detail that makes a book interesting and that the plot took A LONG TIME to get going. | I first became interested in the book after seeing the film adaptation of it on TV one day as I was flipping through the channels. The character of Melinda Sordino was captivating. Soon afterwards, I bought Speak and read it in one sitting.
Although this is labeled as a YA novel, I'm an adult woman and thoroughly enjoyed the novel. Anderson has written a completely realistic, heart-breaking, inspiring and at times funny portrayal of high school. Melinda is a character I could become friends with, she is that real. The rape ...
