| A lot of people like to compete this book against Harry Potter for greatness. Well, I don't know about that, but I do know that Mr. Skye, however delusional he is, can certainly churn out the fantasy story, probably with even more creativity than Rowling. However, Rowling is a better writer than Skye, so I suppose I have to knock off a star for that.

| I had just finished reading (nay, devouring!) the His Dark Materials trilogy, and thought it was excellent. When I was looking for more from Pullman, the first thing I spotted was Lyra's Oxford, so I decided to get it. Unfortunately, I didn't read the item description closely enough -- I had not realized that this was only a booklet, and not a book. It was a stretch with the slang talk of the south but it was understandable. It was an eye opener to the children as to how things were in the 1930's. For a while now I'd seen Holly Black's "Modern Faerie Tale" novels in the YA section, but I passed them by, assuming they were just one in a number of "edgy" fantasy tales with goth-y or otherwise "alternative" heroes or heroines. Don't get me wrong, I love edgy and have nothing but love for a good outcast type character and characters with piercings and green hair. | A friend loaned me her copies of this series. I enjoyed them so much I wanted my children to be able to read them, but I was apprehensive about having them read her autographed copies, and they weren't available at our local library. I was so delighted to find them at amazon.com and at such a great price I just couldn't pass them up. This is one of those true classics, great for both kids and adults. Enjoy! |

| I read this for a young adult lit class and absolutely fell in love with the blatant charm of the old-school small-town charm and the subtle heart that pervades even the brashness of the characters.
This is for fans of all of Peck's coloquial writing, though I'm sure it might annoy a few who would rather have their stories dark and serious. Still, I can't help but be fond of it, and it's hard to see a guy write a girl's mind as well as Mr. Peck can. |
