| Being born decades after the Depression, in the South, to a middle-class white family, I'm about as far remvoed from Bud, not Buddy as one can be, yet I felt right at home with Bud.
I found his overall attitude and persistence interesting. He never in the book said, "I give up", instead he continued to his goal no matter how far away or far fetched it seemed to be, and when he got to his goal it didn't seem as far fetched as I thought it was. | This particular Odyssey had enough intrigued to keep our daughter intersted but not so much that she became scared or confused. I love the fact that some of the stories continue on and that it causes thought provoking questions from her. I don't know about some of you, but I am egstatic that she is learing life lessons at the same time she is having fun. She often chooses a story at night to listen to continuously. |

| "Monster" was an outstanding book and should be read by any child that is heading in the wrong direction. Over the years, there were so many students I could have recommended this book to. This story is about a black teen and the inner city, but please do not feel this book could not help a child in the suburbs or Asian/Hispanic/White teens. | The BFG is the Big Friendly Giant whose values get him in a heap of trouble among bigger and not-so-friendly giants. My kids LOVE this story that we originally borrowed from the library. When I saw amazon's great price, I had to buy 2. One for us and one to gift away. Roald Dahl is at his best here and as a teacher, I enjoyed pondering the potential geography lesson applications from this story. No matter why you buy it the book is loaded with teachable moments and lots of heart. |
