Frances Balkwill has the ability to write about science without making it seem to science-y or over kids heads. Mic Rolph's pictures are fun and draw kids in to the ideas. This book explains cells, proteins, DNA, as well as some current genetic hot topics. I use these with junior high students. They are always engaged in the topic!

I looked through the book and it's looks excellent - really good pictures and a lot of facts along a story line. It turns out to be a little too old for my grandson who's just about four now. He's very interested in dinos and that's why I purchased it. He will probably be ready in another 6 months to a year. I would say this book is good for five and over.

The author begins with the observation that hypoxia is disadvantageous to life, and proceeds to infer breathing, in all its variations, is therefore more important than any other selection criteria. Such an argument is moot as any requisite attribute is by definition equally necessary. While portions of the book are well-formulated, the increasingly speculative and unsupported correlations quickly become tiring.

My 8-year old daughter really likes this book. It has "lotsa gross stuff". We read it as a family. My daughter already has an extensive library and is quite a bookworm. I asked her about the book just now and she went to the shelf and pulled it down and gave me a quick review. It is very well written and informative, and has fun drawings. I actually read it myself and learned more than I cared about spiders. Dr. Day is a trained pediatrician and has a good grasp of the child's mind. This book might be even better suited ... I love the story of the grandfather passing down his love of gardening to his grandchild. I love the fact that the book is reinforcing healthy foods and gardening. Each page has really cute illustrations and the story is just right. It keeps kids wondering what is going to happen next and also gives you plenty of opportunity for activities. When I used this book with Pre-K & Kindergarten we planted red beans and waited for them to sprout.

Books : One day in the prairie
This book has some of the most beautiful pencil drawings I've seen in a children's book. While the story isn't overly enthralling, he does a great job of describing the animals and plants in detail to help the reader learn about each one and to really imagine they are there on the prairie. We will be using this book as a resource to study prairie life.

Ms. Gibbons is a WONDERFUL writer. Her drawings, however, are definitely not in the category of her writing. They detract from her books. I am a children's librarian and I have seen time after time that kids will avoid her books because the pictures are so unappealing. This is a shame since the text is usually outstanding. Ms. Gibbons should think about getting an illustrator or a photographer to supply an equivalent to her text. If she were to do this, her books would reach a much greater audience.
