The book was well worth the purchase, nice cover and great photos. What I would like more is a book with photos of mainly President Elect Obama and his family but I'll be patient because I know it is forthcoming.

One of the best pieces of work I have seen from Eminem. You get a look into his personal life and the man behind the brilliant lyrics. This book told me just enough about his life to respect him, but without giving away too many details. The pictures were awesome and entertaining, and there are many original copies of his lyrics. If you enjoy Em's music, you must get this book because it shows him in a completely different light. Everyone I showed it to was amused, even those who are not particularly ... Read More:

The Widow Clicquot by Tilar J Mazzeo is clearly a labor of love. The author goes into painstaking detail regarding a fairly obscure part of French history to tell us the story of a remarkable woman and by extension the story of how Champagne became the bubbly we love today. Barbe-Nicole Cliquot (nee Ponsardin)lived during the French revolution and would no doubt be even more obscure than she is had she not been pushed into business by the untimely death of her husband.
Mazzeo does a great job of bringing ... Read More:

84.The World Is What It Is: The Authorized Biography of V. S. Naipaul by: Patrick French

There is no doubt that Naipaul is a great writer and there is no doubt that, as biographies of living writers go, this is a model of clarity and organization. However, Naipaul is a thoroughly disagreeable person and his life (outside his writing, which speaks for itself - and often brashly) is a model of a life poorly lived. Naipaul takes pride in acting reprehensibly, exploiting others, and behaving abominably to women (his mother, his first wife and his mistress among others). What kind of man brags to the ... Just finished the book and have to say the author's stories seemed very contrived. While many historical facts are presented like the Iraq War or the Control of Panama Canal, the author's stories of meeting "local people" seem made up and don't provide any useful evidence to the reader beyond attempting to help the author's own conspiracy agenda. I was hoping for a lot more from this book, but it fails in so many ways, and believe this guy is in the same category as James Frey.

Yes, it is obvious that it hasn't been edited but that doesn't detract from the beauty. Language is wound like ribbons, outlining the pictures of the characters, framing them and revealing them slowly.

The desperation, fear and transient nature of the characters fall off the page, revealing a landscape littered with the machinations of war. Characters come alive in mere fragments of sentences, the nature of war evident on every page, filling the reader with an intense feeling of dread and discomfort.

I heard of the name of David Mccullough in the past as a writer, but was never inclined to check out his books. Just recently while perusing the news channels his name was discussed as a fascinating author so with my interest peaking, at the first opportunity I went and purchased a copy of Truman. From start to finish I haven't been disappointed. With more than a thousand pages it's like two volumes in one. Majority of the pages are filled with quotes from Truman. It's like having the subject speak for himself. I brought John Adams ... Read More:

John Stauffer has written a rather incredible book. And while it is not exactly the dual biography it has been touted as, the whole is still much larger than the sum of the parts: It is timely, well researched and nuanced; and accomplishes the tricky task of following the parallel lives of these two preeminent self-made men until they converge. And then it explores the importance of that convergence to the development of our democracy during the period surrounding the Civil War.

Stauffer whets our appetites by pointing out the numerous ... Read More:

Books : On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft
I've been away from writing for many years and thought I'd start with King's book to get me back into the swing of things. It worked. (I may not be writing to publish, but I am writing--and that's always the first hard step.)

King includes myriad practical tips and techniques for buckling down, staying focused, and pay attention to what's important. King's use of his own experiences as examples of what to do--and what not to do--make the work both personal and moving. His candor is refreshing and his delivery is effortless.

Carlo D' Este states clearly that his purpose in writing this biography is to explore Churchill the warrior. The book, he says, "is less about events and more about Churchill the man -- his leadership, his triumphs, and his failures." D'Este succeeds in this goal.

D'Este describes Churchill as in company with men "born for war," such Frederick the Great, Oliver Cromwell and his own famous ancestor, the Duke of Marlborough. Churchill, D'Este maintains, cannot be understood if one approaches him as a politician or statesman who was destined to conduct a war but ... Read More:
