Oh how I felt for this child. My heart was torn in two. Child abuse just astounds me. How does it happen. And then the ignorance of the legal system! The school dragging their feet along, knowing something was wrong. I cried through this book.

The author/waiter is a highly educated college graduate who proves to be an excellent writer as well. He can take any situation or anecdote, embellish it with a little humor and turn it into a story that capture's one's attention from beginning to end.
While nothing in the book is earth-shattering, I will say that much of it is eye-opening. Besides, there are many stories that most of us can relate to on a daily basis, especially those who work with the public: dealing with nasty customers; ... Read More:

I read this book in two days because it was so harrowing and riveting. The author grew up in a household with a depressed mother and a cold, uncaring father who showed signs of being a psychopath. It's amazing that Burroughs survived with all of his intellgence and sanity intact. There may be some people who think that households like this do not exist, but they will have to think again. The more people that survive child abuse and speak out about it, the better. Burroughs has done a great service and has created ... Read More:

Scott McClellan spends the first 100 pages of this 200 odd page book telling us about childhood, his powerful mom and his early political education. He assumes that he is an important enough historical figure that we really care know about his collegiate tennis career, etc, etc. These revelations are not why I read this book and I doubt it is why many others have chosen to either. He spends the next 100 pages saying virtually nothing that we don't already know if we have been following the news for the last eight years. From ... Read More:

This book is a bit like cotton candy: You get the feeling that there may be a lot there, but in the end, there's a good taste in your mouth, but not much more.

It's a great one-hour read. Many of the six-word "memoirs" are very clever, and some are touching. However, like some other reviewers, I bought the book on the strength of a radio interview with the editor. I learned that he read a large fraction of the best ones on air; there wasn't much more in the book.

Be advised, too, that though the book is 225 pages long, ... Read More:

I was really suprised when I read this book.
Before reading it, I knew of Motley Crue as a band, that had been around for a while and had lots of groupies and did drugs. That was pretty much my perception of them.

I hadn't really heard there music, and I wasn't really interested.
But I bought this book, and honest to god, they are now my favourite band.

After I finished this book i went and downloaded all the albums, and it was great because as i listened to the albums, i could put each album to a certain part in ... Read More:

Steve Lopez has written a moving story about Nathaniel, a homeless man, once a student at Julliard School of music. Mental illness has over taken his life and robbed him of what could have been another famous performer of classical music.
Through Steve's articles in the LA Times, he opens a world to a stranger that he met on a street corner, living on Skid Row, and whose world revolves around nothing but music. Music takes Nathaniel into a mind of his own world that no one seems to understand.
Beethoven rules his life. Nathaniel receives ... Read More:

I do enjoy Bryson's writing, and have thoroughly enjoyed his other work. And I do enjoy the writing in this book. However...why am I not laughing so hard at this book? My boyhood in the 60s was just under ten years removed from the world Bryson describes. Yet so much of what he describes was real about my world, too. I, like him, feel keenly the passing of a world and a way of life that was decent and enjoyable. Perhaps it is that bittersweet aspect of it all that makes this book less of a laugher for me. I have to say that the book brought back many fond ... Read More:
