| This is one of the greatest books written on the Lewis and Clark expedition. It has every element of a great novel let alone the historic, factual, epic it is. There are passages that can make one weep as well as those which terrify. Some day, hopefully soon, a movie-maker will turn this book into an award winning film and reveal to the public the depth and majesty of this great American adventure. |

| I gave the book three stars because I expected a little more than a glossy coffee table book. The book has enough substance and divulges enough about Laird and his worldview that it was an average read. However, I doubt I will ever read this book again which would merit a four or five star rating but if you are a Laird fan, probably a must have for you. |

| Emily Post is written with thorough attention to detail, skillfully intertwining the private, public, and mythical icon into a very real person. Ms. Claridge intersperses this biography on with so many entertaining anecdotes that despite being a lengthy biography, it has a light touch. Ms. Claridge's writing has the wonderful combination of being both intellectually satisfying and very readable at the end of a long day. |

| This refers to the audio CD, which I have listened to on my way to work & on a recent long trip. I have the hardcover also, and I just had trouble getting to it. Anyway, the reading is excellent. More important, the content is fantastic. I will admit that I often have to reread passages (in the hardcover) or press the "back" button on my CD player to listen to something again. This is not light fare.

| Partly in an effort to better understand the presidential candidates in the 2008 election, I ordered this book on tape. Although it was a little tough getting through the technical military equipment descriptions (not having a military background myself}, it was great to hear it read by John McCain. When finished, I felt I had a much better insight into the man, his family and his service to this nation.
