Books : Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life
The pressure is tremendous. To write a review of a book on writing -- the review almost has to smack of winning a Pulitzer. Well, I'm no writer, so I'll do my best.

The frankness of Lamott is very refreshing. So many books on writing just cover the technical approaches and don't really address the psychological factors. And when they do address them, it's usually couched in too much politically correct bile. Not so with Anne -- she tells it like it is. A breath of fresh air.

Nazism didn't die at the end of WW II. In fact many escaped allied forces and set up shop in South America and elsewhere. Wealthy and idealistic, Nazis regrouped and often allied themselves with their enemies.
Jim Marrs documents the whole business in "The Rise of the Fourth Reich".
Read about Nazi scientist brought to the US through Project Paperclip and how NASA and the space race were initiated. The book covers eugenics, mind control, propaganda, education, religion and the Nazi who's who ... Read More:

I hate to be the first reviewer to throw water on this Booker-shortlisted novel, but so it goes.

This novel is the literary equivalent of Oscar-bait, those middle-to-high-brow movies that come around in December and display solid acting and deep characters yet are not that challenging or complicated. Perhaps we could call this Booker-bait.

Barry is clearly an accomplished writer and a master at poetic prose. The Secret Scripture drips with poetic little aphorisms and bon mots that make the reader admire ... Read More:

Bill Bryson's concise biography of Shakespeare is brilliantly written, humorously insightful, and entirely delightful. The prose is a well-crafted and playful presentation of the dozen odd facts known about Shakespeare and many of the suppositions, inferences, and wild speculations about the man and his work. This Shakespeare primer can be easily understood by any high-school level reader and no prior knowledge about Shakespeare is required--Bryson even helpfully informs the reader that "William Shakespeare of Stratford was unquestionably" ... This is an amazing look into the life of a man who was born to make money. He absolutely knew from a very young age that he would be rich. Most of us have no idea what we want to be until after we graduate, but Warren Buffett always knew what he wanted to be. The author made me feel as if I actually knew Buffett personally. Good job.

When the first page of the first chapter of a book takes the reader on a trip to *DEATH-ROW-AT-ANGOLA-STATE-PRISON-IN-LOUISIANA* you can be sure you're not at the beginning of a typical sports book! The author Warrick Dunn is assuredly a star football player in the NFL... and a former college All-American at Florida State University... and a first round draft choice of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers... and the twenty-second player in NFL history to rush for ten-thousand-yards in his career... and the owner of many more enviable statistics...

It was a pleasure to read a true perspective of this founding father. This book made him more human than history has made him in the past. The author did a fantastic job in trying to explain why he was the way he was and painted a vivid description of the life and times. On the other hand, I have always found it interesting how he stayed gone most of the time during the revolution as well as many of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. I would love to read about those that stayed and fought knowing they could be hanged for treason.

Books : One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd
There was a point in this book when I had to decide if I wanted to continue. Only one other book in the last couple of years made me think that: A Wolf at the Table. That one so brutalized me as a reader that I never picked it back up. One Thousand White Women isn't nearly as harsh--or as well written. Still, it's clear where the book is headed, and I had to decide if I wanted to be sad while I read the last third of the book. I did finish, and I'm glad I did. Glad, but not surprised.

This story of May Dodd and her life with a band of Cheyenne Indians in 1875 is ... Read More:
