| I am not quite sure how I happened upon this book but i am glad I did. The writing is a beautiful portrait of Kenya in the early 20th centure. Written from the view of English settlers, Beryl Markham was quite a character. Rumor has it that she may not have penned the book herself. I would like to learn more. |

| I found myself plodding on and on to get through this book. I thought the very early part of the memoir (about the first 1/4 of it) made for some very interesting reading. I liked the authors style--almost like reading a prose poem---but then the author took us in his early career as a journalist I read too many chapters about that; and that is when I shut the book for good. |

Hurrah! Now I won't have to wait for the radio to play Dylan Thomas reading his wonderful Child's Christmas every Christmas. Truly a beautiful recording of the other poems as well. |

| At times it was very difficult to read this true story due to my tears and heart stopping feelings. I think that this book should be required reading for the young people of today to let them know how blessed they are to have what they have. I hope our system has changed enough so that the things this young boy, and the many others in the book faced are not present today. My heart is still hurting from this story but I am glad that I continued with the read and finished Mr. Burch's story. I am going to pass ... Read More: |

| I didn't know about the story about Squanto and his life before and during when the settlers arrived on the shore, but now I do. thank you for breaking the mythical 'thanksgiving image' that we have thought for so many years. our society needs to know the truth, and not sugar coat it. |

| I got this book for my 6yr old son because of his interest in presidents and other important figures used on monies. We read about one every night before bed. In less than 2 months he can name all 43 presidents in random order, and also knows who is on each bill. also my 4yr old daughter can name all 43 by the pictures but it wont' be long. Can you do that, I can't. This is an excellant book to get them started on and to keep him interested in history. They are both excited about going to DC to see some of the monuments. |

| The great children's collections of Emily Dickinson's poems... I'm sure they exist. They'd have to. We're talking about one of the greatest (THE greatest?) American poets to put pen to paper. It would be patently ridiculous if there weren't a couple collections for kids out there. A quick search of my library's catalog and I see things like Poems for Youth which collected seventy-eight of her poems alongside illustrations, published in 1996. Or there was A Brighter Garden with illustrations by Tasha Tudor, which came out in 1990 ... Read More: |
