| We bought this for our niece. The stories are heart-warming, but also sometimes realistically heart-breaking. I think it'll help any child develop sympathy and respect for other animals, plus city kids will get a glimpse of farm life.
We had read the comments about it being hard to read and understand, so my fiance read me a story from it before we wrapped it up and sent it out. We did get some good laughs from him trying to pronounce a few things. The problem isn't that the words are big, its that the author is ... Read More: |

| I read all these great reviews, so of course I got the book. It's good. I like that each hero has two pages, and the book is thought-provoking.
But it's slanted... These _are_ good heroes to admire, but for the life of me, I can't think why a book like this would include Sandra Day O'Connor and exclude Clarence Thomas. I prefer the Childhood of Famous Americans series -- the books are more in-depth and enjoyable, and more politically neutral. |

| If you are studying the New England Pilgrims and Native Americans, this is a great teaching tool for older Pre-K on up. I teach 4 and 5 year olds, and they really enjoy this book. I read a chapter a day of the fairly simple text, making modifications when necessary. The colorful photos are some of the best you can find on this tribe, giving the children a greater understanding of the Woodland Indians. |

| This is a great introduction to presidents as others have said, but also to American history. The best thing about it is the time line provided with each president that lets kids know what was going on at the time of that president's term in office. It is fun to hear my kids tell others the silly facts they have learned about the presidents and it's impressive that a book could make this much impact on kids. They are learning and enjoying it! That always gets 5 stars in my book! |

| We use this book as part of our home school curriculum (Ambleside Online) and love it... the stories are short, some illustrated and have historical significance (pulled from many sources, greek and roman history, bible, great figures in American and European history etc). James Baldwin's book are a SURE Thing when it comes to value for dollar. He write so simply, but yet, there is no "dumbing down" as it is called.
