| This book drew my attention because of the kid-friendly introduction to the saints' lives. It is artfully written in a way for the kids to relate to the saints' personal experience. I like that it is not syrupy sweet, like the books I used to read when I was younger. The author uses modern vocabulary and poses thought-provoking questions for the young readers. | The theme of this book, in my opinion, is to tell the story of Anastasia Romanov, who, as the title states, was, "The Last Grand Duchess," of Russia. This book tells about the life of this young grand duchess, from a fictional standpoint. It portrays her from the time she was thirteen, until the time of her death at seventeen. It shows how palace life could have been dull and dismal, but how it could occasionally be fun and interesting.

| Admittedly, my interest ebbed and waned throughout this read. Just as I thought I "got" what the author intended, a new narrator would intervene and I'd be forced to revaluate the story. This, ironically, was the tension that kept me reading when I felt either lost or frustrated. I was determined to understand what Shield's was saying.
Unlike many other reviewers here, the final two chapters were where I experienced my eureka (intended or otherwise by the author); where I found the story absolutely profound. Close ... Read More: |

| I bought this book for my grandaughter's 5th birthday as this book is about Laura's 5th birthday. The illustrations are really wonderful. We went to Walnut Grove, MN last summer and I had bought one of the other books from this series. Easy reading and not long (fewer words) for younger children. |

| This is an interesting book of short biographical sketches of 25 people who overcame obstacles to reach their dreams. I found it to be both inspirational and fascinating! It includes people from the 1800's to the present with various dreams. I especially found the fact that many overcame poverty and disabilities to accomplish their dreams. I enjoyed reading about the people I've heard of but also about the ones I didn't hear about before reading this book. It encourages the reader to have a dream, commit to it and never give up. I ... | I first saw this book in the children's gift shop of the Smithsonian's National Gallery of Art, and have since purchased three copies as gifts. It's very witty, and I love the modern look of the drawings. It's very enjoyable to read as an adult, so reading it over and over (and over!) to your child won't drive you to hide the book. This would make a fun gift for children of architects. |
