11.Night; with Connections by: Elie Wiesel
1999-10
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Night; with Connections
A horrifying account of one man's survival of the concentration camps during the Nazi regime. This book is quite short--maybe 50 pages or so, but in those few pages Wiesel's words are chilling, devestating and horrifying. And I hope that anyone who reads it might then get a small insight into the worst crime against humanity in the western world and say "never again."

This Laura Ingalls Wilder diary is somewhat dull in parts, but the introduction by her daugher, Rose Wilder Lane, is worth the price of the book. Lane gives a first-hand account of the days before and after the journey that puts Laura in a new light. There are also several good photographs unavailable in other LHOTP books.

Ambrose's 'Eisenhower' is a very popular book, if the reviews here are anything to do by. I would seem to be a lone voice of dissent, in that I was not impressed by this tome. Oh, it's not a bad *book* - Ambrose writes well and vividly - it's just a bad BIOGRAPHY. Ambrose himself admits in the first couple of pages that he has immense respect for Ike as a great and good man. Oh dear. That is *never* a good start, to admit that you have strong feelings for your biographic subject one way or the other. What follows ... Read More:

The story of Melba Patillo Bates' struggles as a part of the "Little Rock Nine" to integrate Central High School serves as a haunting reminder to the American public, especially the South, which sometimes turns a blind eye to its unpleasant past. In the book, Warriors Don't Cry, Patillo relies on her own personal first-person narrative to tell the tale of the years 1954-1960, even including entries from her own diary that her grandmother purchased for her at the age of twelve.
The action of her story begins with the day ... Read More:

BOY: TALES OF CHILDHOOD was a thoroughly enjoyable autobiography about the early years of British author Roald Dahl. I used to wonder how he came by such an unusual first name until I read that his family originally came from Norway. All of that and more is written in this small book, and some 81 five star reviews preceding mine attest to how truly entertaining it really is. Of particular interest to me were his years in several Public Schools (We here in the US know them as Private or Prep Schools.) where he excelled in sports and suffered, ... Read More:

Suddenly in 1954, she is struck by feelings of extreme weakness and is diagnosed with leukemia. This was before there were effective treatments against the disease and she goes into the hospital where the disease progresses rapidly and she dies. ... Read More:

Some very smart kids just don't fit in the classroom. They learn differently. This book assures those kids that they are not "weird", but just might need to learn lessons differently. Unfortunately, most state educational programs do NOT address these needs.

Hopefully, these different-learning kids will learn to accept themselves rather than to succumb to any titles that may be assigned to them, ie, slow learner.

"In my hands" Irene Gut Opdyke narrates her tribulations during WWII. The saga of atrocities committed by the Nazis is intertwined with echoes not to be indifferent when another person's freedom is in jeopardy. Sharing her story with young life audiences, Irene is inculcating the same imperative: "You can make a difference; you have the power to fight against evil."

As a native of Poland, I find many familiar images in Irene's early surroundings. She comes from a little town close to the German border, so do I. I am inspired by Irene's
tolerance ... Read More:
