Oliver Cromwell wanted Sir Peter Lely to paint him "warts and all," showing who he really was. Jean Fritz's wonderful biography, Why Don't You Get a Horse, Sam Adams? apparently does the same for a Founding Father.

Sam Adams' attitudes revealed in this history book for young readers may be somewhat objectionable to some, however, it is important to note that people are the product of the time and society in which they live. Adams is no different.

This is our history, and ... Read More:

This is a fast read -- you'll find yourself drawn into the book quickly -- and a wonderful piece of historical fiction based on Henry II of England, Louis VII of France, and of course Eleanor of Aquitaine, the only woman to be once queen of France and then queen of England.

This book enhances a young reader's appreciation for the Middle Ages. Although impressively accurate, Konicsburg makes one error when Empress Matilda (Henry II's mother) refers to King Stephen of England as her nephew ... Read More:

An amazing story about an Indian who's land is being invaded by Englishmen. A life story with good detail and ''never heard of parts''. If you saw the movie and enjoyed it then you would love the book even though the book is different from the movie you would still like it. I think even if you did'nt enjoy the movie I still think you would like the book. Once you start you never stop. It plays a movie while you move more and more deeper into the book. A little romance mixed with alot of adventure and detail. ... Read More:

Beautifully written. Striking. You can feel the struggles of her life, not being able to remember locker combinations, count change, do five minus two. She goes through her story with detail and feeling, through middle school, high school, and college. She describes her panic attacks, which included muscle spasms and nausea, which happened all through middle school and returned during college; she described the effects and responses of her self-published poetry book; and she described the struggles of having ... This is one in a series of DK Biographies that will probably be of greatest interest and value to younger readers (ages 7-12). I also highly recommend them for use in ESL and literacy programs whatever the ages of the participants may be. Each volume provides solid historical information in combination with more than 100 archival photos and attractive illustrations. All volumes in the series should be available in public and school libraries and, fortunately, are sturdy and thus will hold up well despite frequent ... Read More:

This is a great way to learn the history of slavery and the sacrifices made to gain freedom for everyone. It is written in story form and catches the attention of young readers. I have a 14-yr old high-functioning autistic boy who has really enjoyed it.

Michelangelo is an interesting look into the life of Renaissance superstar artist, Michelangelo Buonarroti from birth to death. Born in Italy March 6, 1475, Michelangelo was destined to become an artist and knew this is what he wanted from a young age. He was raised in various homes, by a nurse in the village of stonecutters and later in the home of the ruler of Venice, Lorenzo Medici who recognized his talent and brought him to live with him as his own sons. At the age of thirteen he begged his father to become a lowly artist's ... Read More:

I think Phillip Hoose's idea of portraying history through the eyes of children is great. However, his research could be alot better.
I got his book because a relative of mine, Ellwood Harvey MD, was actually involved in one of the stories that Mr. Hoose wrote about in the book, Maria Weems:Escape to Canada. It was Ellwood, not Dr. Howard, that took Ms. Weems from the White House to Philadelphia (and then onto NYC). While I can forgive this mistake, many sources have gotten it wrong, there are too many mistakes in this chapter that ... Read More:

Homesick is a great, interesting story that summarizes her childhood life. Jean Fritz uses wonderful, descriptive words about how she felt during her life in China. This book kept me hooked all the way through and I would defiantly recommend it to all age groups.
