| I agree with the previous review that this book was similar to the Magic Treehouse series, but I think this book was even better than those. My six year old daughter and I loved this book. We planned on splitting it up over two nights of reading, but got so involved in the story that we read the whole book in one sitting! | We use "Our Young Folks' Josephus" as our primary history spine which mentions all these cultures as they relate to Israel. What I like best about this book is that it covers cultures that are often not well represented in other books of this type, particularly the Nubians, Mesopotamians and Hittites. | We checked out every Egyptian craft book from our library for a homeschool unit (grade 5, and this was among the top 3 that we actually used. The projects in this book go beyond mummies and pyramids, and some are very unique (hippopotamus statue) while others are a bit cheesy (masks out of posterboard). This would be great for a classroom teacher as most of the projects can be completed in a short time and with few materials other than posterboard. | This is to me, without a doubt, one of the best non-fiction book for kids ever created. It's a great book! The pictures are wonderful- from a baby mammoth preserved for hundreds of thousands of years to the oldest mummy of a human being ever found (5000 years old!). The facts are interesting, too- for instance, mummies are found all over the world, so long as the temperatures are either really dry or very cold. | Eyewitness Africa is one of the books in the eyewitness series. The book lacks lot's of information. Why on earth does a book about Africa not have lions? The book's title is wrong, the book is only about Africa's people! Also, it's not a book you what read over again . Of corse,you should barrow the book if you need to do a report on them. He enjoyed the book, but I think he gleaned more moments of "ewwwwww, gross!" than historical information. While the process of mummification was indeed "gross", you have to make sure you don't stop there (unless that's the approach you take to your children's education). When we watch a show on the History Channel about a particular mummy, I would rather he be awe-inspired by the finished product ... Read More: |
