| The second book in the His Dark Materials series still has you clamoring for more, though the ending leaves the reader more anxious and weary, than the first book. The amount of religious symbolism intertwined with plot devices is heightened and some of the choices that Pullman makes from a writer's perspective works well. There were other choices that he has made, which leaves me to wonder if the plot is taking control of him, rather than the author controlling the plot.

| This is the second book about Peter and what happened to him before he met Wendy. It was very enjoyable, very well-written, and followed very much in the style and story type of the first book. If you liked the first one, you'll like this one.

| If you don't know the story, it's about a naturalist, Professor Arronax, and his assistant on a quest to find the giant sea creature that's been menacing the seas. But the sea creature turns out to be a submarine, the Nautilus, and they're joined by the harpooner Ned Land in being rescued/captured by its crew when their attack on it fails.

| The story started off quite engagingly, though I thought I'd discovered the secret right away (chapter 4!). It turns out I'd only discovered a small secret and the big one was still to come! There's also an element of reality (yes, in a fantasy book!) that struck me. Not everyone is perfectly redeemed, people don't always do the smart thing (but they also aren't made extremely stupid just to advance the plot).
