Books : Surprise Island (Boxcar Children)
Growing up in the same town as Ms. Chandler, I was lucky enough to go to the library to hear her read her stories. I loved them. I wasn't sure if my kids 30 years later would love them as much as I did. I think we've read the Boxcar #1 at least 6 times. The kids just love the idea of setting up a home, without adults, and taking care of themselves. Who doesn't love the pink cracked cup and the stream cooler. I wasn't sure if Surprise Island would have the same kind of magic. It did! Not only ... Read More:

Admittedly, I'm not part of the target audience it was written for. But I just think that it could have used a little more character development and the plot could have been refined a little. Also, I felt that the ending was a little too abrupt.
But overall, it was not a bad read. There were some very interesting points in it.

I'll save a review of the book for others, but suffice it to say that I really liked it. As a narrator, Anton Lesser is superb. I've listened to a lot of audiobooks, and he is one of the best.

However... it was when I was referencing my place in the story in a paper copy that I noticed that a paragraph in a certain physical scene between two characters has been entirely omitted. Later, when the male is asking the female whether their encounter was painful, the dialogue has been altered. ... Read More:

This was one of my favorite books as a child, and i just gave it as a gift to another child. It is an excellent book - a true story about a famous horse who had to overcome tremendous struggles and his faithful groom who managed to accompany him and assist him no matter the personal cost, as well as a look at prejudice and genuine kindness.

Like other reviewers, I liked the Charlie Bone series better, but I give this 5 stars because this series is still well written, and is still a good read. It actually got my 10-yr-old son to put Harry Potter down for a few days! LOL He did find the 3rd book a bit confusing-I think it's better for kids interested in dating because of all of the romance complications involved that one just can't understand until one has had a broken heart. But the 1st 2 books are fine for a tween.

It was nice that this ... Read More:

I have had a copy of this book for probably 25 years, give or take a few. I loved reading it as a kid and patched it up again today so that I can read it to my children. This is an entertaining story for both children and adults. Big Max has made me chuckle many, many times. I highly recommend this!

All of these stories by an English story teller are about
historical events of plastic action figures like G.I. Joe?
The magic of the box and the key are here transfered to
a car key and father and son save Little Bear's band of the Mohawks
by sending them north to the hard cold Canadian reservation.
The admission that historically the British have been treaty breakers
is probably good. Many an American knows that the Indians
or Native Americans have been treated badly, even shamelessly ... Read More:

I'm always torn on what rating to give the Narnia books. I think if you take the series as a whole, it is - in a way - better than the individual books.
I did enjoy "The Last Battle" quite a lot! And, unfortunately, took longer to read it than I would have liked (which probably didn't help the flow of it). But, for the most part the good and the critiques are the same as always.
The world of Narnia is beautiful! Aslan is always magnificent! What we learn of the characters is enjoyable, and often fun, and I end up feeling ... Read More:
