An excellent first novel. Easy reading plus gaining insight into different cultures and lives. Would recommend this for all ages.
Lovely, intertaining, understanding prejudices, and finally love.

I agree with all of the positive reviews of this book, however, having recently adopted transracially I was disappointed with the many photographs in this book. The book shows phots of 3 familes; one Caucasian, one African American, and one Asian [The parents may actually be Caucasion but have dark hair and olive skin like their daughter]. There are no photos of families with children who look physically different that their parents or siblings. Additionally, all families are 2 parent, heterosexual, able bodied ... Read More:

This book is about a girl named Rachel Ellen Turner who was adopted by two alcoholic parents. They are loving though. They adopted her despite of her leg being stiff and her skin color being darker than their's. Rachel had no freinds at first, but then she met Python, a dog. They were inseparable.
One day the town that she is living in, Bolton, Kansas, desides to have amonument put in the town in honor of the people who died in war from Bolton. The town hires a man named Mick to build the monument. Rachel ... Read More:

Hannah West in Deep Water (Hannah West)

My nine-year old daughter is enthralled with all the Hannah West books. She can't wait to read and re-read every one of the books. I'd highly recommend this book and its 'sisters' to any 9-12 year old girl who likes a good mystery.

A good book with interesting information and my 3 adopted sons liked the "quick facts" on almost every page. It is a bit steep in price compared to other books on the same topic.

My children are adopted, and they feel so completely disjointed when sex ed comes up in school. This book covers not only sexual intercourse but also in-vitro fertilization, which is so often overlooked. This book also covers ADOPTION, thank goodness. It is written from the perspective of, how do families come into being? It addresses each way this can happen. It is neither condescending nor promoting nontraditional means - it just acknowledges that there ARE nontraditional means. I was so very happy to come across this book.

My son loves this book's illustrations, and Soentpiet is one of my favorite artists as well. It's a little long on words, but it really gets you in touch with the emotions of kids involved in adoption as a bystandard instead of just one-on-one with the parents and baby. My son would not part with this book on his life!

I found this book a "fly on the wall" look at a tender moment between a mother and daughter. It gives insight to adoption through the little girls eye and would be a tender approach to the subject of adoption no matter what country the adoptee is from. I have bought a copy to donate to the children's section of our local library and plan to do so to the school library in the Fall. The illustrator did a wonderful job of capturing the tender feeling in her use of soft color. I'm glad this was recommended to me as a grandmother of an adopted ... Read More:
