Pete, the eldest of the Monroe boys, has won an essay contest for describing why the Fleshcrawlers book series grosses him out the most, and now the author of the series, M.T. Graves, will be visiting his school. What's even more exciting is that, instead of staying at a hotel like he normally would, Mr. Graves has asked to stay with the Monroes, all so he could meet their most unusual pets.

The entire family works hard to prepare for their guest, especially Howie the puppy, who is ... Read More:

Books : The Adventures of Tintin in the Congo
Though long a Tintin fan, and having read almost every Tintin book there is, I found this Tintin to be a turn-off. For one thing the storyline and art is not as well-developed as Herge's later creations. However what disgusted me was the Colonial attitudes of Tintin, constantly paternalizing the Africans, and brutally murdering animals left and right. This is not the warm-hearted caring Tintin of later fame, but a young kid who sees himself as superior to the Africans around him and is made King. This episode ... Read More:

My daughter loved this book. It's a fun read-aloud, but not so difficult she couldn't read it to herself the next night. And the illustrations are so cute.

Herge, The Secret of the Unicorn (Methuen, 1946)

This is where Herge really started to get great. A series of wallet-snatchings in plaguing Brussels, which Thomson and Thompson are investigating. Meanwhile, Tintin buys an old model of a ship as a present for Haddock, and is immediately accosted by two people who want to buy it from him. Both stories converge when the ship and one of the missing wallets become parts of the key to the final resting place of the Unicorn, Sir Francis Haddock's legendary ship. Just ... Read More:

CENTENNIAL EDITION LITTLE WOMEN OR MEG, JO, BETH, AND AMY A wonderful book I remember from my childhood and plan to read again. The illustrations by Jessie Smith are outstanding. Also, the story is set in a period of our history which is so fascinating.

Books : Baby Sister for Frances
My granddaughter was having a very strong reaction to her new baby brother so I gave this book to her. We all about died laughing the day she announced she was moving to Florida, behind the rocking chair, with her 3 bags of toys. Not the dining room table that Frances moves to, but it seemed to do the trick and granddaughter is adjusting well. Seriously, this book really helped her with her feelings about another child coming in to the family. Thank you to the Hobans!

Please note: The Bantam version (translated by Hieatt) only contains the most popular of the Tales. (Use the "Inside this Book" feature to check the table of contents, as I, alas, did not.) The facing page translation is just what I was looking for, but really wanted the complete set.

My son is in 8th grade and never a big reader (which I am trying to change). This book appealled to him on two levels. First, the short story format was less "stressful" than having to commit to a full length book. Second, the variety of stories has something for everyone. Some stories he identified with personally and others he felt helped him understand someone his age with a different background. There was also a mix of humor and seriousness that he really enjoyed. We both reccommend this book heartily.

Tintin, still in India helps out a Chinese family having problems with a bunch of Japanese military gangsters, in a rather cross-cultural extravaganza.

Said gangsters would like to test out their sword sharpness on the young reporter's neck. The Blue Lotus itself turns out to be an opium den of iniquity kind of joint.
