Who Stole the Wizard of Oz? by Avi is a good introduction to the literary mystery. Think of it as akin to The Bookman's Promise but for younger readers.

Here detectives are fraternal twins Becky and Toby. Becky has the bad luck of being accused of stealing a set rare books that had been set aside for the library sale: The Wizard of Oz, The Wind in the Willows, Peter Pan, and Through the Looking Glass.

While The Wizard of Oz is the impetus for the mystery, the heart and soul ... Read More:

This book tells the story of a bear who wants to make friends with the moon. Over the course of the day, the bear observes and plays with the moon, clouds, fog, and rain. The bear is very well behaved- -he helps out around the house and eats his dinner when he is supposed to. He faces disappointment when he doesnt always get what he wants, but he learns to appreciate what he gets. This is a delightful little story (about 750 words), that contains nothing likely to incite anxiety amongst youngsters.

Books : The Jolly Pocket Postman (Viking Kestrel picture books)
I picked up two Pocket Postman books at a flea market in England when I traveled there for work. Both my daughter and I have really enjoyed them. There is so much to read and explore, the books never get old or memorized. She loves to find the letters in the pockets and I love the inferences to English life and nursery rhyme allusions. They're my favorite children's books!

I"ve made a career out of entertaining families with my quirky show. This book captures my highest goal - to mesmerize adults and kids at the same time. I think our sons loved it . I know that they asked for it again and again. Was this because of the spare text , hilarious drawings, or the surprising plot twists , each with their own perfect logic? Maybe they just could feel my joy in reading it, and so I uncontrollably pushed it on them!! His illustrations show remarkable range, and Milo shows so many feelings withtout ... Read More:

Cam Jansen, the girl with the photographic memory, is on the case. When a woman's dog goes missing on a guided boat tour, Cam must figure out who stole the dog. This book offers young readers short chapters, illustrations, and well described characters. I would recommend this as a great transition into chapter books. Children will enjoy following the case and finding clues to solve the mystery. Recommended for ages 7 to 10.
