| I was expecting...well not this. I thought it would be a novel with all the gods as mortals. Instead it was a diferent format with mortals as gods. The style it was written in was interseting once you got used to it. It's nice to see something diferent. But it felt like the book would have been a lot thiner had it been writen in the traditional manner. I wasn't expecting it to be so messed-up/sad. Blending fantasy with reality, most of the characters in these short, short stories are young girls who live on the west coast of the United States. | I read this book as soon as I got it and immediately felt like I'd frozen. I've been reading her books sinc I was like 12, and this was the first time I'd ever felt dissapointed.
I mean firstly I couldn't get into the story "Girl Goddess #9" because it was just plain boring. I know that this was one of her first forays into writing because of how stilted it is. | Each story is a short, clever, beautifully crafted, emotionally gripping, contemporary spin on a familiar fairy tale. Written in spare language, this is not mass market, yet it's not so high-brow that I ever had to strain to grasp a meaning. I read it in a couple of hours, but I will remember and ponder these tales for a very, very long time. |

| First off, I am an avid fan of Francesca Lia Block and have read basically everything she has ever written. I read this book for the first time when I was 13, and was stunned at the beauty of Block's honesty. The murky quality of narration is accurate of any coming-of-age story, especially one dealing with the issues addressed in this book. Block's ability to weave fantastical themes into real, contemporary life awes me every times.
