Do not shy away from this book because of its length (or because of the Oprah sticker!). It's a fantastic story and when you're finished reading, you'll wish it had been even longer. It's true. This book is on my list of all-time favorites as is Lamb's earlier work, She's Come Undone. I'm now eagerly awaiting his new novel which I've just ordered.

Every book lover simply must discover Wally Lamb.

We went on a camping trip with a bunch of teenagers 16 & above and all it did was rain, so to pass the time, we took turns reading aloud, and just could not put this book down. You will not easily forget Delores, because she lives in many of us. You will not be disappointed with this book, we all loved it.

The language is inescapably lush and beautiful. The layers of storytelling are breath-taking. The emotional power is undeniable. This novel has humor, pathos, tragedy and hope. A joy from beginning to end.

Books : The Reader
Bernhard Schlink's THE READER is written so simply and perfectly, that any one of any age, gender, ethnicity, or other can enjoy this book. In order not to spoil a thing, all I will say is that the story surrounds the relationship that forms between a teenage boy and an older woman in mid-20th century Germany. Later in life, when they are brought back together in unlikely circumstances, Schlink examines not only their history, but the very recent history of Nazi Germany in a trial that is difficult to forget. ... This story is set in 1940s Louisiana. A young black man is with friends who plan and execute a robbery--which goes bad quickly. The young man, Jefferson, is quickly arrested and tried for murder--even though he had no weapon and was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Enter Grant Wiggins, a young black teacher who is chafing at the racial inequality of the times. He'd like nothing more than to leave this racial backwater bayou and head north for a city with more equality. But Jefferson's grandma is a family friend, ... Read More:

6.Black and Blue (AUDIO CASSETTE) by: Anna Quindlen

Books : Black and Blue (AUDIO CASSETTE)
As an occasional reader of Anna Quindlen's column (who often disagrees or doesn't quite like what's written), it's hard to disagree with the fact that Quindlen is an excellent writer and has an intelligent mind. This was the first novel of hers that I read, and I'll probably seek out more.

But I didn't really love the book. I liked a lot of it, that's true. But some parts bothered me quite a bit. The writing is really great - you're immersed into this world wholly and feel like characters around you are warm and alive. ... Read More:

The book,Where The Heart Is, is a wondeful and very inspiring book. It has taught me that no matter what, my friends and family will always love and be there for me. This book made me realize that when I have no one else to go to and I'm on my own, I have to think and stay positive. The main character, Novalle Nation, had to survive on her own. Novalle went through many struggles in her life, but no matter what, she always stayed positive and believed that things would get better. With her positive attidude, she was able to change her life. ... Read More:

Certainly not terrible, but I am at a loss why Oprah picked this for her book club. Never cared too much for characters, annoying dialogue and narration, just a forgetable novel for me.

The first Bohjalian book I read was "Double Bind" and both my husband and other family members thoroughly enjoyed it. It held our interest from page one and maintained a keen level of suspense with a truly WOW ending. So when I was lent "Midwives" I thought it might be an interesting story and probably a quick read considering its size. WRONG! This book reminded me of all those women who must tell you every detail of their deliveries whether you care to know or not. I had no trouble envisioning all those weepy-eyed souls who groove on this smaltz. ... Read More:

I rarely enjoy anything that Oprah picks... even when I read it before she does. This was an exception. The story of Astrid is disturbing, painful, and beautiful all at the same time. She is dealt more hard knocks then you can imagine, and starting at a very young age. Maybe she gets through it all because she really doesn't know any different. White Oleander is a roller coaster of emotions, and a book you won't be able to put down
