| My eight year old daughter asked for a chemistry set for her birthday; a real chemistry set; one she could do real experiments with. There are no longer many quality chemistry sets on the market. I guess the safety regulations are too strict; making it unprofitable to sell "real" chemistry sets. I ordered this book. I was concerned I would end up having to mail order supplies, but I made one trip to the grocery store and my daughter was set to work through the book.

| As an experienced public-school science teacher, I find this book invaluable. Its contents range from simple, few-second demonstrations all the way to many-week experiments. Some of the experiments, such as the study of osmosis through use of salty water-soaked potato or cucumber slices, are commonly found in science books. Others, such as the spray painting and study of spider webs, and the counting of rings on fish scales to determine the age of the fish, are quite unique to this book.

| Although this book was published in 1993 (ancient for many science texts!), its experiments are highly relevant, interesting, and fun. I use them in my science classroom, and everyone finds them very easy to understand and complete. It's not like biology; earth science didn't completely evolve in the last 15 years. |

| I bought both of Van Cleave's "Best Science Fair Projects" books for my middle school child and was not impressed, in fact, I returned the first "Best Science Fair Projects" book as it was simply a waste of time and money. Readers should be advised that the majority of Van Cleave's projects are for very young children in early grammar school years, they are not for children who are planning for science fairs at the middle school or high school level, at least not on a competitive level. | I liked the experiments in this book, and my girls (ages 4 and 5) loved them also, but I found that there was quite a bit of prep time and gathering of materials for the experiments. Most of the materials were easy to find. Bottom line - plan ahead. Do not wait until the kids are ready for an experiment to find the materials. |

| I sent this book to my over weight granddaughter to help her see the importance to good food decisions. I want her to like herself but understand keeping her weight under control is in good food choices. She is in another town so unfortunately I have not seen the book and am judging this by her phone call. When I did come to town, she couldn't find it. She is a good reader.
