The reviews of this book overrated it by a long shot. Most of it dissects the personal conflicts between his close confidents and is of extremely limitted interest. The interesting conflicts, such as that of the bank, his fights with Congress, his Indian resettlement policy, and his views on slavery are basically superficial. His evaluations of Jackson are generalizations and are repeated ad naseum. Even with his essential approval of Jackson, it would help if in the perspective of history he ... Read More:

John Adams

The book was shipped with decent shipping time. It arrived before Christmas so everything was good. My husband loved it even though it was used. It looked like it was still in good shape. The content of the book is awesome!

This book is an exciting and compelling account of of the 1893 Chicago Worlds Fair. Although it reads like a mystery novel, it is actual history. Two parallel stories run through the book, the account of the planning and success of the fair as well as the activities of a sinister serial killer who preyed upon visitors to the fair. The author is especially adept at bringing out the interesting side stories that intersect with the account of the fair. Highly recommended--especially for fans of history and ... Read More:

4.Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era (Oxford History of the United States) by: James M. McPherson

Books : Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era (Oxford History of the United States)
In my opinion this book richly deserved its Pulitzer Prize. Sometimes prizewinners disappoint me, but this book met my high expectations. McPherson writes with clarity and provides rich insights into the causes, conduct and results of the Civil War. Unlike some Southern writers, which provide a very one-sided view of the war (that of a virtuous South up against an immoral, but more populous, North), Professor McPherson, while generally presenting a somewhat northern view, presents a reasonably balanced picture of the ... It's tough to sum up Lincoln's "wit and wisdom" in a single volume, but this little book takes a valiant stab at it. Personally, I found it a nice work to accompany a more substantial biography or Civil War piece.

Note: The hardback book is listed as being unabridged, but no such label is provided for the paperback edition, implying that it is abridged in some way. I read the hardback, but I have examined the paperback closely and it appears to be the same, page for page. The one difference appears to be a Roosevelt family tree (for TR's parents, children and siblings) that appears on the inside cover of the hardback, but does not appear in the paperback.

I liked this book, but it is not quite as good as the other books ... Read More:

The GOOD -- A nice, fairly entertaining, analysis of 5 key events in early US history from 1775 to 1803 with insights you probably didn't get learning about them in school.

The BAD -- Ellis writes with metaphors galore, which can sometimes get annoying.

The UGLY -- Does Ellis really think he "knows" what people were thinking 200+ years ago?

"...the historian's duty is to understand, not simply condemn" (p. 590).

"This book tells a story; it does not argue a thesis" (p. 849)

These boasts apparently signify Daniel Walker's Howe's understanding of his "duty" and his book "What Hath God Wrought: The Transformation of America, 1815-1848."

They are also an unmistakable sign that Howe is delusional not only about American history, but also about himself and his work.

This work, which is so awful and so offensive that it is beyond ... Read More:

This book certainly adds to my knowledge and understanding of colonial history. Cokie Roberts has added a useful dimension by concentrating on the women married to our early presidents and showing us, through the language of their letters that they were as courageous, politically astute, willing to sacrifice, and devoted to promoting the strength of our new nation as their husbands. I'm thinking of Dolley Madison and Louisa Adams (married to John Quincy) here.Portraits of other women are valuable, also, such as the young woman pioneer who literally walked ... Read More:
