Books : Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance

Published in 1995, long before Barack Obama could have even conceived of running for president, this coming-of-age memoir brilliantly reflects the confusion of having mixed race parents and of being a "black" man in today's America. It also finely tells the story of a boy and then a man and his elusive delusions about his missing father. Finally tracking down his heritage and the truth, through Kansas, then Hawaii, and then Kenya, Obama spins a truthful and authentic tale about losing and then finding ... Read More:

This book should be on the "must read" list for anyone who is either in a position of leadership, or would like to be. Having read this book I could completely understand how people make it their life's work, being a Lincoln scholar. While many have written of Lincoln, this author gives equal coverage to those critical to the success of his efforts, those who were so assured that they would be the presidencial nominee, that they did not even attend the convention. To learn how to work effectively with ... Read More:

I would highly recommend this book to everyone. I looked forward to the release of this book with great anticipation and began reading it as soon as I received my copy. This book gives great detail about Jackson's ancestry and early life of hardship; including the loss of everyone close to him. Meacham does a wonderful job telling the story of how Jackson improved himself by studying law, his rough journey west to Tennessee, his difficulties of life on the frontier in the late 18th and early 19th century, his military ... Excellent well researched book on an important period in American history that has affected our country to this very day, and the lessons
will probably not be heeded now. First time that have ever read the truth of what actually occurred in the Depression of the 1930's.

The most interesting book on FDR I've ever read. I learned a lot more about the state of our nation when FDR was elected and what FDR did to keep our republic on a more democratic path.

I'm sure our new President-elect and his staff are reading this book so they can learn how to make great things happen in Washington in only 100 days.

My background on the Civil War is pretty much limited to my three visits to the Gettysburg battlefield in Pennsylvania, and it took me a while to "get into" this book. However, for those readers who share my limited knowledge of the war I would recommend this book to you. President Abraham Lincoln learned on-the-job when being at the helm of this war, and he often expressed his frustrations with his "indifferent generals" for their "imbecility" and "inefficiency" in contrast to his "good, brave soldiers." Lincoln especially expressed his frustration ... Read More:

I've been a longtime fan of Sarah Vowell. Unfortunately, this isn't my favorite book of hers. What I really love about her other books is that I can pick them up, read a chapter or two, put it down and come back to it a couple of weeks or months later and read a little more. The chapters tend to be self-contained little stories. She dives in for a little taste of something, explores it, add some anecdotes and then moves on. This book is different in that it's all one in depth look at the Massachusetts Bay Puritans, well, more specifically, one of those Puritans (Winthrop). ... Read More:

So many times people say "I could not put this book down." This is the first book I have ever read in one sitting from "cover to cover!" I am fascinated with the topography of Afghanistan and fighting a war there has to be a real challenge for our troops. This story drops you off in the mountains of Afghanistan where the entire region is filled with tribal fighters and the Taliban. Exciting, riveting and impossible to put this book down without finishing it. My advice, visit the bathroom before you start to read Kill Bin Laden!

The 10 Big Lies About America: Combating Destructive Distortions About Our Nation by Michael Medved is a timely book that will set the record straight.....I hope. After years of "PC" and revisionist history, I'm amazed that anyone writing books remembers American history as it used to exist.
Medved doesn't shy away from sensitive subjects in The 10 Big Lies. Dealing with misconceptions about slavery is always a touchy issue. Medved doesn't sugar coat slavery in America, but he does put it in perspective. I'm always amazed at how misinformed people are on the topic anyway. Slavery ... Read More:
