Finally, a book that makes it easy to share all the ideas of God with children. In it's exploration of all the different kinds of beliefs, children can see all paths to God as different, yet perfect, and without one way having to be better than the other.

This book explores: what God means to different people, different holy books that are read, how they connect to God through prayer, meditation, and more.

I plan on using this with my Latin I people this coming school year. I think they should have a little Greek philosophy in the culture mix. This looks like it will work well. The lessons are neat little nuggets that I can use independently of each other.

I had trouble last year explaining what a fallacy was. We read the chapter in "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" called "love is a Fallacy" which I think they enjoyed, but it felt a tad tangential and they STILL didn't really get it.

As others have said, this book is quite good, with beautiful collages as illustrations. The first half of the book is simple, following Earth's great geologic ages and the major lifeforms therein. The second half is about the process of biological evolution itself, and much wordier (you may have to slow down and explain a bit for the kids here -- evolution is, after all, a complex process).

There are two details I'd like to mention.

First, when describing the rise of the dinosaurs, ... Read More:

Loved Goedel Escher Bach; utterly disappointed by this new work. Again, Hofstadter uses Goedel's theorem as an (overly abstract) analogy for how tangled mappings "just might" lead to a sense of autobiographical self. Details are missing.

DH gives a poignant and worthwhile story of how we make a coarse-grained internal model for the autobiographical self of those close to us, and that after their death, that rough model can continue to run as software in our brain, giving a kind of fleeting immortality.

It's definitely easier to learn from the book by having the solutions to the end of chapter questions, however, as a whole I was not impressed with this solutions book. A lot of the problem is from the end of the chapter questions though. Many of the questions are "verify this.." or "show this equation in chapter is right..." so not exactly user-friendly learning tools. In addition, for many questions I found the solution book would just show a graph and not necessarily explain how they got the answer. I'm still glad I got it though as ... Read More:

I actually never received this product at all, eventhough it was promised it earlier than planned. I did see the ones other students in my classroom purchased. It has some good helps in some areas, but is not very complete and doesn't help a whole lot with understanding the subject. When a book like this comes through for you, it's cooooool, but this only has answers for some of the problems and doesn't go into much detail to point out areas where you may need a little more help.

My kids and I set down immediately and I read the book to them (5 and 10). They love the easily remembered phrase "Maybe Yes, Maybe No" and use it (on me) when I challenge them with questions about the world. The phrase helps them to think through alternative answers to questions...it makes them think. Kids will challenge their own, and others, assumptions about the way things work. A great book for kids!

When we think of Transcendentalism, we first turn to Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. But the literary movement was made up of more personalities than just those two men; and while "Nature" and "Walden" are key writings, they're not the only examples anyone can or should read. Hence the need and attraction of any transcendental anthology: it brings us multiple voices, perhaps even some unfamiliar or unusual ones.

This volume is a treasure-trove of transcendental goodies, containing more than 100 selections from 32 writers. ... Read More:
