Some love this book, some pan it. I loved it. Philbrick specializes in creating deep characters who are very different but somehow form alliances based on discovered caring and talents. The story is uplifting and promotes healthy values. A quick read, and very hard to put down!

Hmmm...., what can I write about this book. Great character's, intelligent details, honest theme, STEREOTYPICAL!!!!! This book is an attempt at revealing the beauty of disabled children, yet it comes off as a book about a girl who is embarrassed about her autistic brother. That's understandable, but when you write a story on such a delicate and easily misinterpreted theme, you have to be careful. This story greatly reminds me of "Julep O'Toole, Middle Child". It seems that the only way authors can get across ... Read More:

I read this book with my nine-year-old child in one afternoon. We saw immediate results. Her OCD symptoms were relatively mild to moderate, but we saw a dramatic decrease in OCDs immediately. It was as if the book gave her permission to take control of a situation that she felt was out of her control. She was instantly transformed back into our happy, cheerful and talkative child. She no longer sits in social settings repeating words in her head and missing the life going on around her. I HIGHLY recommend this ... Read More:

My ten-year old son absolutely loved this book. It is full of teen angst, and sports-related action; however, the subject matter is very heavy and can be somewhat disturbing. The blurb on the back of the book gave me no indication that issues of violence and bullying in the book (and some uncomfortable language) were addressed within. The actual reading level is not difficult, but as thought-provoking as this book is, I recommend it for very mature kids or students in grades 7-12.

Lois Lowry provides a little look into a fantasy world. No special powers, luckily, but it is an imaginary land with imaginary people. They could exist though, people could be like that... As the book opens our special girl is somewhat even luck to be alive.. Usually when a child is born with a disfigurement they are sent out to die, but Kira, now a teenager was luckily spared. The words "Gathering Blue" can have more then one connotation, but both may apply here. As you read the book, look occasionally to the front cover to gain insight to the heart that flows ... As an author of children's books that teach autism awareness to typical peers, I found this picture book to be a refreshing introduction tool to use for preschool through younger elementary kids. Through vibrant, vivid and kid-friendly illustrations, the book provides an excellent resource for teachers, family members, sibling support groups and community members who are introducing autism to little kids. By teaching autism awareness to typical peers, it demystifies autism with hopes of creating more welcoming and understanding environment for kids on the autism spectrum.
