I had tried many different books from Black Beauty to Little Britches to enrich our homeschool literature time.
No joy. Of course, to be fair, it's worth mentioning that my children are still all 6 and younger (all five of them!)

When we did a thematic unit study on penguins, I came across this book in our local homeschool store, and it was a HIT! They all begged me to read "just one more chapter" every night. We went and saw the penguins in another town as a family vacation as ... Read More:

This is a very rare book, luckily I came across it in 5th grade, and it was definitely a book to die for. It was an accurate, unique, and imaginative story about two children who befriend a strange and creative man who introduces them to a world filled of new and unique animals, plants, and many different things. This world could only be realistic if you imagined it. Soon they found themselves in a great adventure to meet the last of the really great Whangdoodles, and save the existence of the Whangdoodles ... Read More:

we have very few babar books. he died so young, and his family cannot cut it. the later books are so bad that they're offensive. but this is the first and it works. the only sad thing about it is that babar was not brunhoff's brain child but his wife's and she has never gotten credit for it. she created the elephant as bedtime material for their children. he retold them well, and illustrated them as his children cannot but she should have been co-author at the very least! our kids love this book and the characters ... This book is awesome! I have read it many, many times over and still love it every time!! Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny have become real people to me! Their independence and bravery give you a good lesson and a easy read at the same time. A good book for any young reader. (or old!)

First, let me mention that this is a pretty wordy book. Maybe a bit too wordy, because it does seem to drag on in parts. I'm constantly cutting out a paragraph here or there because it doesn't add much to the story and I really want to get on with things anyway.

And, you know, it is a nice story - about a woman who "makes the world more beautiful" by planting lupines - but there just isn't much to it.

It's not very compelling to me. We read it only occasionally.

This is one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. I never heard of it growing up, and my parents were diligent in providing us with the classics. Even today most of the customers in my bookstore don't know it exists. This is a crime, because it belongs right up there with Alice in Wonderland and The Wind in the Willows. It's a fantasy about a bored little boy who gets into a magic car and goes through the phantom tollbooth into a land of adventure. He must rescue the princesses Rhyme and Reason to restore order to ... Read More:

First off, let me clarify in my personal response that I've never been a fan of the historical fiction genre. Historical fiction books bore me, and they never seem to contain the excitement found in contemporary fiction. Sarah, Plain and Tall, while more character-centric than most historical fiction books, still just didn't catch my interest. I was just glad that unlike many historical fiction books, this one actually didn't shove random historical facts down the readers' throats in massive clumps--the historical details were there, but very subtle. Still, ... Read More:

When my Danish sister-in-law gave my four-year-old daughter Pippi Longstocking, I was shocked. My daughter did not like to read, and giving a four-year-old a chapter book seemed ambitious even for a child who adored books.

What I discovered is that my daughter did not like to read because I had been choosing for her the wrong stories. At four, she was ready for more ambitious reading, yet I was still offering her picture books.

My daughter loves reading now. She adores Pippi. The trilogy is perfect children's literature.

It's finally happened! Ramona Quimby is old enough to attend kindergarten! She can't wait to do big kid stuff like learn to read and participate in show and tell. Parts of school are confusing, like the song about the dawnzer. But she is making new friends, like Davey, her first crush, and Susan, whose hair is so curly it just cries out to be tugged. But when things go horribly wrong, will Ramona ever return?

I had read this book before but had forgotten just how wonderful it was until I reread it recently. Author Beverly Cleary expertly captures ... Read More:
