| Rather brief story, but an excellent introduction for the reader in grades 1-3 who is interested in archaeology. Good coverage of major points for this age range--what archaeology is, types of objects likely to be found, that the work continues into the lab, etc. I just wish there was something this good to introduce the same ideas for upper elementary students--I thought about using this story with an older group because the concepts were introduced so well, but decided they would find the story ... | Personally, I am not very excited by the fictional series of Magic Tree House books. The extra stuff about Jack and Annie are very boring to me and I've found many students who feel the same way. What excites me and I find interesting are the non-fiction companion books. They are 10 times better than the fiction books. I love to read them and learn a lot from reading them. |

| My son got this when he turned four, and loved it from the start. He still pulls it out and pours over it, a year later. He loves it! I appreciate the different categories being covered (though I agree with the other reviewers - maybe the Paleontology Encylopedia would have been more appropriate) and love the comparison to human size chart on each page. I do wish they would put the pronounciation though, since sometimes I am forced to make it up... He loves flipping through and studying the creatures. ... Read More: |

| This book would have been great in my college geology class. It makes learning about prehistoric creatures interesting and puts them into a simplified order to gain some general knowledge. I think lots of kids skip over the part between the big bang and dinosaurs, and this makes part of that time period exciting! |

In the age of dinomania it is rewarding to get some attention [again] for the animals which ruled the earth after them. | I bought this to supplement our homeschooling science program because it is next to impossible to find a homeschooling science curriculum that will encompass human evolution and/or the earth's geological inception.
This book has not been very helpful. The illustrations do not create a time map to show how human evolution progressed through time. In fact, the illustrations are not particularly helpful.
