| I was asked to teach an AP CS course and thought this looked like the safest bet - the kids hated it! It is clearly a hacked down version of the authors other Java books. Explanations are not clear and the book simply could not have been written in a less engaging manner. I will not use this book again and will avoid titles from this publisher. |

| I initially approached this book with much enthusiasm. The author is a very engaging writer, intermingling an otherwise boring subject with much humor.
However, this book is not really all it is cracked up to be. For starters, the book deals with a little known 3D game engine based in BASIC known as Blitz3D. | The book starts out appearing to be a good beginning programming book. But it quickly becomes apparent that it is "C++"-centric. The author states "you can't do this" or "you have to do that", which is true of C++ but not of other languages. There are also examples of problems and solutions "explained" in the book that are oversimplified and have no accompanying code (see the part on merge sort).
I think I'll choose another text. |

| Ok, yes, 2005? VB6??? Are you aware that Microsoft has discontinued selling and supporting this software?? This software was first published in 1999!!! Find a book that is using a little bit more of state of the art technology. This one is a waste of time and money. |

| This book is ok if you are not serious about game programming. My biggest issue is that you cannot run the programs from the book on another computer. If you want to do that, you have to log on to their web site and pay a lot of money for it. The fact is that I can get a semi-professional IDE from Microsoft's web page for free. This will compile and create EXEs that I can run on any computer. I can also program in C++ which is the language that almost all video games are programmed in. | I am a math teacher who can program (not a programmer) and clearly the Litvins are experts. However, I have some terrific AP students (5's on the AP tests, 91% pass rate for over 6 years) and my kids really do not like the Litvin books, find them terribly confusing. We are trying out the Lewis Loftus book and liking it. |

| This book focuses on the AB-specific part of AP test. It starts with a good idea as a beginner's book by having lab sessions and exercises. But the book does not clearly explain concepts and in general lacks of examples, some lab session descriptions are confusing, and some exercises are more suitable with different solutions rather than the data structures it suggests. A better approach is to go with a good "regular" Java data structures book, such as the one by Rober Lafore. These books target a broader readers and do a much better job in presenting ...
