This is an excellent book for introducing math and money to your child.

I like that the story teaches generosity when the child customers choose to leave their penny change for the next customer, but I also think parents should teach the value of saving pennies. Too often today, children will not even stoop down to pick up a penny on the street as if it is "not worth their time." Yet, at the same time as parents, we hear, "Mom, it's only a dollar!" or in worse cases: only $2, only ... Read More:

My 7 year-old, home schooled son loves elevators so much that we made one from a refrigerator box! He loves mechanics of all kinds, but was having difficulty with simple math concepts like addition and subtraction. I bought this book thinking it may have an elevator in it, but was surprised to see that Murphy related subtraction concepts to the story. Needless to say, my son loves this book, and reads it over and over. This book gave me the idea to make an elevator panel out of poster board to use ... Read More:

3-dimensional shapes are named and described in a story about a boy and his dog pretending to be on a space adventure but their use in the story is very contrived. Example: when they go thru a meteor shower, they use the cube since "The radar beams from our directional cube will help us find a path to safety. Good thing the 6 square faces of the cube are working properly." About all you can expect from this book is a picture of 6 3-D objects and their names - not related in any way to where they really ... Read More:

This book is quite cute from an entertainment perspective. Farmer Bill wakes up to a snowstorm one day to find that he is missing one of his mittens. When he goes to his barns, he discovers one by one, that each of his animals is missing a mitten (be prepared to explain what a cow's udder is for!). They finally see the goat at the top of the hill who is the culprit - he's munching on all the mittens! When they're all inside, the goat decides to make lunch on Farmer Bill's new coat. Very cute story and ... Read More:

Stuart Murphy makes math fun. Probability is a hard concept for children even though they hear the word quite often. Math needs to be fun and relate to everyday life.
