We had the privilege of seeing this story live at the Broward Center for Performing Arts, and my four year old loved it! I had to buy him the book and now we read it at home and he still loves it! It's a great classic story, and teaches about sharing, friendship and caring for others.

"Once A Mouse" is a fable from India adapted by Marcia Brown who won the Caldecott medal in 1962 for the marvelous woodcuts in this book. As the title page states, it is "a fable cut in wood."

The artistry of woodcuts has always intrigued me and Marcia Brown is totally successful in translating animal emotions, whether scared or scary, bemused or 'lording it' over all. See the dog's wonderful snarling nose and the hermit whose unsurprised, philosophical face contrasts with the haughty tiger ... Read More:

When a college professor for my second born was aghast that her mother had omitted fairy tales from her reading repertoire, I thought I might try a few with my youngest three. This rendition by Marcia Brown is a skillful retelling of the classic Cinderella tale. The pen sketches with watercolor paint additions are unique and add a nice facet to the book. It seems they make the story feel even more romantic. (Is that possible?) It is a nice length and the language makes it easy for little ones to follow ... Read More:

5.The Snow Queen by: Hans Christian Andersen

Books : The Snow Queen
Note: The version of The Snow Queen that I am reviewing is from an early 1900's book of Andersen's Fairy Tales that I have - thus, the "original" version.

The Snow Queen, a fairy tale by celebrated children's writer Hans Christian Andersen, is a light, somewhat interesting make-believe story. This work, like most of Andersen's other pieces, brings magical happenings into "real life" and is not set in a mystical land.

The story begins with the account of a wicked ... Read More:

In (...)I used to look at the large posters displayed in the school library showing the various Newberry and Caldecott Award winners. On the Caldecott poster the small picture of Marcia Brown's "shadow" always stood out from the other books. When we were asked to check out a book I was always dismayed to discover that "Shadow" was not available in our libray. Having finally read it some 13+ years later the bold use of color and and word play make it as appealing now as it did on a poster in elementary school.

I definitely recommend this book, because in a simple manner a new way to approach a goal is taught leaving you the option to pursue and reach.

Because the limitation that it is imposed at the beginning is overriden at the end, all were able to participate in the method.

I give a true recommendation to my friends and to all of you reading this.
