Lessons my daughter has learned from Edward Tulane:

Little children can cough and cough so hard that they cough up blood.

Little children can die from coughing.

It's okay to run away from home.

There are mean, mean adult people out there who crush dolls or throw them in trash heaps or smash them; who hit their children and tell them they are going to die; who throw homeless people from trains and kick dogs; who ridicule their elderly parents or ... Read More:

The debut picturebook of Newbery Medalist winner Kate DiCamillo, Great Joy is a heartwarming Christmas story about a young girl who loves to hear the music of the organ grinder, but is troubled by wondering where he and his monkey sleep during the cold nights. She can't get the problem out of her mind while preparing for the local Christmas pageant, but when the organ grinder comes to see it, her pageant line feels just like the right thing to say: "Behold! I bring you tidings of Great Joy." Singularly ... Read More:

The story is an adaptation of the original, more or less a hybrid of the old Disney cartoon and the Sleepy Hollow movie starring Johnny Depp, but Gris Grimly's art brings this tale to life. The format borders on graphic novel and the hardcover edition is absolutely beautiful. This book is perfect for Halloween, rearing Gothic children or unusual fairy tale collectors like myself.

Eva Ibbotson has done it again! Just when I think I may be disappointed in her, because you never know when an author will exhaust their repertoire, I'm pleasantly surprised. Yet another story of pure devotion, history, twists and turns, and another reason to burn the midnight oil. I love her ability to describe a place so that I can say I've been to Vienna and England. My only disappointment is that I can't meet her and beg her to write more, plus I have so many questions. I highly recommend this book!

As someone who teaches eighth grade language arts, I read a lot of adolescent lit. This one is a new favorite! In a school year full of the Gossip Girls, the Clique series, and vampire love (it's everywhere!), I found this story to be a refreshing and thoughtful alternative without losing any of the intensity of romantic love affair. The Amazon setting is unusual/exciting for adolescent readers, but they'll perhaps find familiarity in the miserable father-daughter relationship and Harriet's desire to leave. This is definitely something ... Read More:

This book was published in England in May 2005 and will release in USA in 2006. So I bought the British copy as I could not wait for another marvelous story from Eva to send me into stitches of laughter.

In the story a brother and sister, Madlyn and Rollo, are sent to stay with their kindly Uncle at his "Castle Clawstone" set in the Scottish Highlands. On arrival they find out the dreamy sounding castle is falling apart. The castle is under a huge debt and no funds are available for repair. There are friendly ghosts living in the ... Read More:

As the daughter and niece of three of Britain's most powerful and influential women in the late 1930's, Ellen's future and options are limitless. But instead of attending Oxford, she shocks her mother and aunts by enrolling into a cooking and housekeeping academy, and then accepts a position as a school matron at Hallendorf School, in Austria. Hallendorf is far different than any boarding school that Ellen's ever known. The teachers and students are free spirited, lively, and dramatic. But most mysterious is the gardener, Marek. Marek is plagued ... Read More:

I never especially liked Cinderella. She seemed a little too self-pitying, and her way out of her miserable situation was to become beautiful (thanks to a fairy godmother's magic) and "catch" a man with that beauty. But I love what Diane Stanley has done with the old story.

For one thing, Bella has much more going for her than beauty. Let me take that back - Bella has more going for her than external beauty. She has to be one of the most pure-hearted characters I've encountered in my reading, yet Stanley doesn't allow her to slip into ... Read More:

I picked this version because of the illustrations and it became a part of my personal library some years back. Every year in the fall, I return to Sleepy Hollow and to Icabod's misadventure with the Hessian. A unique tale by Mr. Washington and I especially enjoy the mysterious ending, leaving the reader to wonder the were abouts of Icabod Crane and the Headless Horseman.

Whenever I venture at twilight out in to the forest for a walk in the moonlight, I am often reminded of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow and it's local ghost habitant who haunts the ... Read More:
