The Graveyard Book has been something I've been anticipating for a while, because I'm a huge fan of Neil Gaiman. But I am not giving this 5 stars just because I'm a fan, I'm giving it 5 stars because this is one of the best stories you can find by Neil. It will please anyone who reads it, no matter what age. The stories are all engaging, and Neil's excellent, yet subtle sense of humor is ever-present. My favorite thing Neil does is that he uses metaphors and similes and imagery that portray the most ... I purchased this book for my about-to-be 4th grader. I liked the format of everything written in the first person-i.e. each of the four characters writes a narrative. The plot ended up being a little thin and the ending was a let down.

My biggest objection was the multiple uses of the word "sucks" and at least one "freaking" (as a substitute for the "F" word). Maybe it's acceptable for teens to use these words on a regular basis but I didn't feel it was appropriate for a 9 year old. I discontinued this book ... Read More:

A picture book for ages 4-7, and perfect for adults of any age, the story of family visiting brims with positive energy, and is vividly descriptive of the sights and sounds the visitors brought. "The Relatives Came" provides material for discussion of family roles and expectations. I sent the book to my sister after our family had come through some intense time together.

"Once upon a time, in a gloomy castle on a lonely hill, where there were thirteen clocks that wouldn't go, there lived a cold, aggressive Duke, and his neice, the Princess Saralinda."

Well. that first line has just about everything you need to start off a fairy tale, doesn't it? And it only gets better from there.

The New York Review has just reissued Thurber's classic, paired with the illustrations by Marc Simont, with a new introduction by Neil Gaiman.
The 13 Clocks is as full of fairy tale as you can ... Read More:

I read somewhere recently that "The Kid Who Ran for President" is a perfect book for upper elementary/middle school students to read to understand the election process. Whoever made that comment is totally right. I learned a few things myself.

In creating this unlikely scenario, Dan Gutman has threaded civics lessons through the warp and woof of the story of a 12-year-old running for president. Judson Moon and Lane Brainard (the names are intentionally derived by Gutman) decide that a kid needs to wage a campaign since the two presidential ... Read More:

I absolutely loved this story as a child. I still love this story. However, I was one of the boys who planned to copy the character in this book. If I had I probably would have ended up being dead. That said, I enjoyed many wonderful hours as a fifth grader contemplating my GREAT ADVENTURE! I spent hours poring over atlases and planning just where in my state's forests that I would be living and building my home. I read numerous books on survival in wilderness conditions. I practiced with a fire bow and drill. I even cleaned & tanned a fresh roadkill ... Read More:

In this book, Neil Gaiman writes roughly six words for each letter of the alphabet and Grimly draws pictures of a kid in a sewer. The text isn't particularly special, but when the entire book would fit on a greeting card or the back cover of a real book, i suppose there's not much you can do to wow people. Gaiman's a good writer but even he would need two paragraphs to say anything interesting. The pictures are really cute and are the only reason to read (look at?) this book. It's a cute book, but awfully expensive for what you get

I have to admit that most of my exposure to Gaiman is through the hands of other artists. In fact my introduction to Gaiman was via Dave McKean. While I did not read the printed version of "Coraline" the graphic edition caught my eye and I picked it up and found I could not put it down. Russell's visual adaptation gave me enough to establish boundaries, but left enough open visually for the head to bring the pages to life. I find interesting the genre of materials (books, movies, graphic novels, music) that are related through the eyes of children, but are best experienced by adults. ... Read More:

OK, I am trying to get ahold of the original Scary Stories trilogy by Alvin Schwartz and Stephen Gammel.

The only difference I know is the artwork:

I would really like to find the original books/artwork...Thanks!
