I'm not sure why DuPrau chose to gradually lower the reading level of this series, but this book reads much more like a book for children than the first three in the series, even though the characters and subject matter remain on a young adult level.

Be that as it may, this is still quite a good book. In the third book, the people of Ember and the people of Sparks are just barely managing to live together harmoniously, but conditions have not improved over the hard winter. Food is scarce ... Read More:

This book heaps wickedness, cruelty, evil, and despair on its main character, and through him, on your child.

The pitiless scorn of his family, the contempt of the mouse council and all the mice, and the death sentence with which the tiny young mouse is condemned, all for being good, all for being different... all within the first few chapters... to offer this to a child as children's literature is utterly corrupt.

To give children's literature characters who engage in psychological ... Read More:

Through this book, Jeanne Duprau takes us on a journey to The City of Ember, an underground city built as a home for a new civilization detached from the existing advances of the human society, but safe from its impending apocalypse. However, as the years advance beyond the age Ember was built for, the society's infrastructure starts to fall apart - and the natural instincts of greed and survival starts to tear into the previously blissful city.

While the plot may seem familiar, it contains all ... Read More:

But I can't think of a worse one...

Let me just say that I bought the first book on a whim and was not dissapointed in the least. The characters were not fleshed out as well as they could be (or not at all really) but the idea of Ember, this underground city that is slowly dwindling away was just so enchanting that I had to keep reading. I really enjoyed the first book, and have read it several times over.

So, in saying that, when the People of Sparks came out I was extremely excited to see ... Read More:

This book is extremely boring. I liked City of Ember, People of the Sparks was so-so and this one wasn't really even related to them.

I can't understand the folks out there that said the book was like Christian Fiction. It was the opposite!! The book portrays religious people, Christians in particular, as narrow-minded, nonthinking people that will follow anyone with a strong opinion like they were sheep. One has to wonder if the author ever met a Christian in real-life (not just caricature in liberal media ... Read More:

When you're young, it still feels like anything can and might happen to you. Adventures peek out from under the horizon, big and fantastical ones that could make you feel more in control of your own destiny, more seasoned as a person, or like you're having more fun than you would be just sitting at home.

Louise is like that. She's a chicken who wants to experience "true adventure" and leaves home to discover what it really is. Her adventures are familiar in theory (pirates, the circus, faraway lands) and yet full of the unexpected ... Read More:

The first time I read this, I simply did not get it. But then I read it again with an open mind combined with my own fond memories of picking huckleberries in the Idaho mountains and soon was more acclimated to this charming little rhyme. The repetion of vowels is great for little ears and the pictures truly are wonderfully whimsical. I still don't get it, but it certainly is darling.

Dahl is a misogynistic creep who was probably abused as a child. Hurting children is NOT funny.
Roald Dahl, and most British childrens' book authors, love to write stories about tormented, punished, starving, suffering children. I don't think British people like children, period. Just read David Copperfield or Oliver Twist by Dickens, any Harry Potter book, Alice in Wonderland among others. British children freeze and are chronically abused until they one day discover a "magical world" where it's warm, they get food and someone cares about ... Read More:

I think other kids would like "Because of Winn-Dixie" because it's funny and realistic. I think the characters are believable because they acted and made friends like they were real. I thought the book was fun because you got to see other kids make new friends. A funny part of the story was when the dog was singing along with the choir. The dog in the story was scared when a thunderstorm hit.

I liked the ending because they lost something important which was sad, but it turned out happy at the very end. My favorite part of the book was ... Read More:
