| I originally read this book in elementary school. I don't know what possessed me to pay the book order money to do so, but it proved to be well worth it.
This book is a classic for many obvious reasons. There is a reason why books like this endure so long. On one hand it is simply a great story about a group of sisters who are very different and yet care for each other beyond anything. Then we have the Civil War story. | Rather than focusing on the political aspects of a dystopia, Anderson focuses on the cultural aspects. Almost everyone has an implanted "feed" from a very young age which gives them access to unlimited information, but also seems to allow corporations unlimited access to the individual. | Readers who have watched the 1985 animated Disney film "The Black Cauldron" will no doubt recognize people and places from this novel by Lloyd Alexander. My advice is to enjoy the dark, creepy film but by all means, read Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain series. It's simply the best fantasy series written, ever.

| There is something for everyone in this book. It can be difficult to find a non-fiction story, particularly an autobiography, told in a way that will fascinate the very young. This book does just that - but fascinates the more mature reader as well - including grade school students and adults. The story of Mr. Bentley is told in a very charming way with warm and pleasing pictures, and easy to read and follow text. You could learn quite a bit just by reading the story line. | I bought this for my daughter and later I bought it for friends' children. I'll probably search for it for my grandchildren too. You can probably guess that I like it! Buying for kids is such fun because you get the wow factor, and then you get to see whether they really take to it by reading/playing with it. Kids don't fib about this stuff, do they! I can report 100% success. The enthusiam they have for all the hidden messages, cards, games is so sweet. This truly is a gift that grows and grows on them. | To be perfectly honest, I've never been a huge fan of the whole medieval thing (beyond blatant fantasy). But I love Avi and I feel this is well-deserving of its Newberry. It keeps this low-key, almost grave, aura all the way through. Crispin's adventures are a lot of fun, and it fits into his world of serfdom.
The characters are great, as well. Avi has always done marvelous characters. They're realistic, not always wild, but fun and loveable and most of all believable. Plenty of adventure and great writing. |

| In this book, a boy is confused about his body. He finds belly button lint, sees a grey mass fall out of his nose, and his tooth was loose. The boy began to panic thinking that is body was falling apart. His parents reassured him that it was all normal.
Parts is a great book because it has the "gross factor." My children are fascinated by boogers and "raisin toes" so I believe this book will intrigue almost every young child.
